I'm not any good at IDing toads, but yes they are on the chunky side and yes, they can eat worms. I wouldn't have it as their staple diet but they are a good mix with crickets.

Depending on where you got this critter, it looks like an American. I'd stay away from waxworms, they seem kinda hard for toads to digest. Stick with crickets, earthworms and fly's for the little one. He does look a little plump but it may not be from over-eating. I noticed that you have him in water and he seems to be clinging to the artificial plant in his home. These guys absorb water through their skin. He's probably over hydrated. See our responses to "American toads as pets". Toads seem to prefer their homes a bit dry. Just a little damp or even dry with just a shallow (very clean) water dish. I don't have standing water in my cages. I turn the dirt a little in their cages with my fingers to make sure it is not too dry. I mist them every night (twice a day if it's dry) when they are out and about. They will usually stand and soak it up. Remember, toads drink through their skin, anything contaminating their water gets soaked into their bodies, including chlorine so try to use spring or bottled water with nothing added (especially floride) for your toad.

How to get your wife to like toads; 1.Get a male toad. 2.Get him to hug your wifes wrist (amplexus). 3. Tickle him so he chirps in protest. 4.Say "Awww, he likes you". Note; Make sure he pees first or you may receive bodily harm during this procedure.

I perferr keeping there substate as dry as possable and keeping a shallow water dish in there tank. I used to spray there substrate like lonny did but I found out really fast that they pee and pooop in there substrate when doing this. If you do decide to spray the substrate and keep it moist you HAVE to change the bedding every month or two because the bacteria will build up in the substrate and cause the toad or toads to get redleg. I know this for a fact because I did not change my substrate and had three of my toads die due to redleg. So in a way you can say I found out the hard way that you need to keep there substrate very clean when you spray them.

I change the substrate about once a week. "yard dirt" is cheap (free)and easy to get. It helps to watch for Butt-Nuggets lying around and try to get them out before they are ground into the substrate.
