safe gap size in rack for hatchlings

DougM Nov 07, 2008 05:54 PM

I'm new to Balls and recently built a rack. I also recently bought a pair of hatchling Pastels. My question is: How much of a gap is safe enough that hatchlings can't squeeze through between the tub and the rack? When I built the rack I used a piece of hardboard for a spacer between the tubs and shelves. The body of the Balls won't go through but any problems with their tiny heads?

I think its best not to have a gap at all. The tubs should be snug between the shelves, but not so tight that you can't move them. Simply drill holes in the sides of the tubs for a little ventilation.

"safe" and "gap" shouldn't be in the same sentence. There is no such thing as a safe gap.

I've built two racks and had a gap in both and had some young balls in there. I don't think you'd have problems with a small gap. I think I know what you're referring to (hardboard), but I put about a 1/8" gap between the bin and top. Allows extra ventilation, and that way if the rack sags any, your bins won't be stuck or a pain to pull.

Thanks for your response. I know the 1/8" gap isn't any problem for the older Balls. I was just worried about the month old hatchlings. Their body is big but I'm sure they could squeeze their noses through. I didn't want their heads to get stuck.
