Panacur safe for gator??

tnsnakeman Nov 07, 2008 06:47 PM

I have an American Alligator that I got back in May. It is a little over a year old and about 20 inches long. It eats great and doesn't lose any weight. I saw what I thought was a worm in the water last time I fed. I got it out but it wasn't moving. I was white in color, about 2 inches long, and it looked like a cork screw at one end and it was rubbery like. Was this a parasite? My gator only eats frozen thawed mice, rats, and quail. No fish or bugs or anything live. This has been the diet ever since I have owned the animal. Anyway I want to give it something to get rid of the worms if they are indeed worms. I use liquid Panacur for all my snakes and always have with no ill effects. Would it be safe for the gator? How much should I give in ccs or mls and how often for how long? I will be injecting it into a food item. Any help would be appreciated, this is really bothering me because I know parasites can be dangerous. Thanks alot.

I have kept 19 species and bred 11 species of crocs and have never wormed one. Sometimes I literally have had over a 1,000 crocs in stock. There might be a case where a croc needs to be wormed but in your case I think not. If its not broke don't fix it. As long as it's feeding and not losing weight I wouldn't worry about it....TC
