collards and leopard geckos

rhynearson Nov 09, 2008 05:36 PM

I am looking for some opinions...

I just read that collared lizards and leopard geckos can be kept together if they are both given enough hiding space.

I have a very large enclosure that currently houses 1.1 leopard geckos. There are tunnels and humid hides that they frequent. In fact, I almost never see them out of their tunnels!

If I obtain 1.1 collared lizard and put them in the same enclosure am I looking for trouble?

Aren't leos nocturnal? Can you provide the high temps that collareds require for basking and the lower temps that leos require in the enclosure that you have? Also, you have a humidity issue with these two species. Leos need moderately high humidity while collareds don't do well in high humidity and need a much dryer environment.

I would check the archives, as if memory serves me correctly someone had asked this question before. It was the opinion of those that posted that having competing lizards in the same tank wasn't a good idea. As predation on either species does and/or can occur, again if my memory serves me.

I wouldnt reccomend it. The ony thing i would house with collared lizards is other collareds or leopard lizards.

This is how i do it. Leopard geckos come from pakistan and collareds from america. Unless they live closley together in the wild i wouldnt house them together.

I keep my Leopards under very different conditions than my Collareds. Leos are indeed nocturnal. They have very different behavior than Collareds and somewhat different natural environment. Leos don't need as much space. I would not recommend keeping them together. If you are trying to maximize space and want more lizards I would say add a few more Leos! I keep mine in 1.2 groups. A bigger tank could easily take 1.3 or even 1.4, but you gotta be careful that their breeding doesn't get out of hand with that many females in one tank.

I absolutely love my collareds, but I must say...they've been a LOT more work to keep them healthy compared to captive bred Leos. I don't think I'd do as well if they were in the same enclosure.

This is my big girl Bambi! She's a beauty but I don't think she would want to live with a bunch of spirited Collareds.

My current leo set up is very large and houses 1.1 it was my hope that by adding 1.1 collareds I could have a diurnal and a nocturnal activity level in the enclosure.

I had read that because they utilize different times they would rarely ever intermingle.

I feel like temperature and humidity can be appropriately controlled for all species in the tank, I was more concerned about the predation of any of them by another

Have a look at the thread at the top of this forum, "Vestigium -- bullied to death?"

I know that it sounds like a cool idea, but I wouldn't do it. I would just get a few more leos and set up a separate collared tank.
