I need some ideas

abeercan01 Nov 10, 2008 08:42 AM

A friend of mine who used to breed mice, gave me 30 of these small tubs he used for breeding his mice. All of the tubs have fittings for an automatic watering system, but i am going to use water bottles instead. I will be building a rack for these tubs and i was wondering if anybody had some pictures of a rack for these type of tubs.

Thanks everybody

By rack do you mean a sliding system where you pull a tub open like a drawer and the inside is completely open?

If so, I don't see how you'll be able to use the lids, which are the best part about those old style rodent lab tubs.

If you just want to use the tubs themselves to build a sliding style rack then I don't think they are the best choice since they don't have a lip to run on a rail, like the typical rodent rack. And they are deep so you need that dropped down food hopper or a deeper substrate so the mice can reach their food.

The deeper substate is more expensive and not necessary, the dropped down hopper does not allow for the tubs to be slid out from underneath.

I prefer sliding rack systems for rodents. It really makes it easy to go through a bunch of tubs looking for that right sized pinky/hopper/fuzzy etc. But those old lab tubs are nice and built well so I'd be inclined to use them as is if I had them.

Maybe I'm missing something. My AM coffee did not seem to work properly today, LOL.

What I hate most about the Lab style tops is filling the bottles. When I was at my peak performance of rodent production back in 04' I had to fill the 5 gallon supply once a day twice on hot days. Current production is once a week fill.

I think i got a little agead of myself yesterday when i was thinking about a sliding type of rack for the tubs. I got to looking and thinking about it lastnight, and realized the sliding rack wasnt the best idea lol. I went to the garage lastnight and pulled out an old snake rack that i started building and never finished. It works great with these type of tubs.

Thanks for the input

I had about 20 ofthe thinner lab cages at one point and I had them on a cheap bolt together shelf. I bought two shelves and used the extra shelves on one main shelf (8 selves vice 4) and it worked well. I could throw food out in about 3 min but filling all the water bottles took the kids along time to do.
