YESTERDAY'S FIND

TOM_CRUTCHFIELD Nov 10, 2008 01:21 PM

Yesterday, less than a mile from our new breeding farm in Homestead, Fl Patty and I took a walk for exercise and to observe nature. We didn't see anything on the way in although they had to have been out. On our way back I looked down and less than 12" from my feet was a pair of EDB'S [Crotalus adamanteus]. Of course I didn't bring my camera but Patty took these pics with her phone. You'll have to look very close to see both snakes. Here in Dade County these snakes are almost extinct except in the Park. It has been many years since I have seen these in the wild walking. NEEDLESS TO SAY THIS MADE MY DAY!!!We left them right there and I hope I'll be able to see them again on other walks. I dare not divulge the location because they will be collected immediately. EDB'S are rapidly declining here in Fl and here in S.E. Fl. they've almost been wiped out....TC

Wow, Tom you are lucky you didn't step on them. You might have injured them. It's nice to know some wildlife is surviving in Fl. Buddy.

Tom, what a great find, but how in the world did you ever see them? I'm looking at a photograph and I KNOW there's an EDB in there, and it's still tough to find. It's nice to hear good news like that once in a while.

Thanks for the kind words. Yesterday I took Jim Peters and a few other herpers out and we had a spectacular day. I'm going to post some pics soon. Yes, we even found Pythons up to 12' long....TC

I never managed to see one my entire time in Florida ( almost 8 years total as a resident). Congrats!

Very nice! Joe Waz still sees them occasionally at Turkey Point as well.

It's always the way when you don't bring a good camera, isn't it?
Still, those are great shots.
Thanks.
