From what I hear african soft furred rats have very little smell to them so I feel that this would be my best option. So I was wondering if this is something that I could pick up at petco or petsmart? Or where I could purchase these at thanks matt

African Soft Fur Rats or Short hair rats are not commonly sold in stores. For the most part you would need to find them at a mom and pop place or a local private breeder of them. If you cant find them around through this means talk to a mom and pop place that orders mammals, usually their suppliers carry them. Although the smell is a factor for you dont rule out rats or mice.
I used a high grade rodent formula and paper pelleted from Harlan(ColdBloods is my local distributor). I house over a hundred mice and two hundred rats with little to no smell and they are changed once every two weeks or as needed. The odor has a lot to do with how you house them, what they eat, and what they are on for bedding.
Hope this was help full.
