Something New from something New

vin russo Nov 10, 2008 06:02 PM

This ball hatched from a Leucistic to Het Leucistic clutch. It turned out that both parents were also het Albino. I used a het Albino male to make the very first Het Leucistics in 1996 & it took 12 years for the Albinism to pop up. Im calling this one the " Polar Ball ".

awesome awesome snake. Totaly confuses me how a lucy has some kind of pattern hiding under it. But totaly love that albino lucy combo.
big congrats

BackBeat Nov 10, 2008 07:12 PM

...Vin's Leucy's have pattern when they hatch....(link below)...

I'm not sure if they 'fade to white' with time or not.
(Can't really tell from the photos... And too many White balls to recall the intricate differences in each as they age.)

Congrats Vin.
That is too cool.

BEAUTIFUL SNAKE! i have never really liked albinos that much...i always thought that an "albino" should be an animal without any pigmentation and albino snakes always keep the yellow coloration. this for me would be the ULTIMATE albino...CONGRATULATIONS!

see, now i want one of those...

woodage Nov 11, 2008 09:30 AM

First of all WOW! I love this snake!
Thing is, it opens up a can of worms for me. The term leucistic refers to the cells inability to make pigmentation right? Thats why the scales on a lucy are white. Why then when introducing the albino gene does a pattern appear??? It shouldn't happen. If a cell is not making pigment then how can you remove pigment?? It shouldn't be possible, but yet theres the proof!! If this is the case as seems to be, it means you could throw a spider into the mix and have a pink and white spider!
Congrats Vin!

JenH Nov 11, 2008 02:04 PM

But there is some pattern on leucys. I think "dirty" leucistics would look the best, imagine a mojo/mojo leucy albino or even an Ivory albino......

herpquest Nov 11, 2008 04:54 PM

No Jen, there is no pattern on a Leucistic - if there is a pattern, it isn't a Leucistic.
A Leucistic snake is a white snake with no 'discerable' pattern.
Some Leucies have yellow and or black marks on them, but no pattern.
Eric Davies

JenH Nov 12, 2008 09:55 AM

You saying that in the polar balls case, there is no pattern and the albino gene is pulling the pattern from somewhere?

You don't think the same would happen to leucistics that have some color on them? Ivorys have yellow on them. The mojo/mojo leucistic has pattern on the head and some yellow striping.

I guess there will be a new push to make more flavors of leucistic albinos....

herpquest Nov 12, 2008 07:51 PM

JenH, there IS a pattern on the Polar Ball, but the pattern has no colour. It must be my British accent that is cofusing you!
AND you cannot have an Albino Leucistic. If it is Albino, it can't be Leucistic. An Albino has no eye colour as such, where as a Leucistic HAS coloured eyes.

herpquest Nov 11, 2008 04:46 PM

That's precisely why I've asked Vin for regular updates/pics of this new 'cracker' Woody. I thik it may develop similarly to Kevin's first Pearls and acquire some colour as it matures.

Got to disagree with you here Chris. Vin's new 'Polar Ball' is an anomoly, in fact it may be the only true ALBINO, with pink eyes and a complete absense of colour-
As I informed JenH, a Leucistic is a white snake with no discernable pattern, Vin's new ball HAS a pattern, but no colour!

Finally, a new snake name that actually makes some sense! I really like the look too, nice snake.

jyohe Nov 11, 2008 04:58 PM

we can now say Leucies have a pattern?....I think this would mean that....very nice....actually a see through white albino snake...a TRUEst of snows....sorta....but better...

.can you post a pic of one of YOUR line of "het lucy"...for us that don't wander around in sites too often (some of us get disapointed in alot of people's sites...you know...the kind with 2002 prices and hatches yet in them ,,,not saying Vin's....I don't remember his )..

NO!!!

vin russo Nov 11, 2008 07:21 PM

The Blue Eyed Leucistics from my line have no pattern or color blotches. I attached a pic of a one. I also attached a pic of a Het leucistic from my line.
My take on the whole leucistic Ball thing is this. All of the "Blue Eyed Leucistic Making Balls " ( Lessers - Mojaves - My hets etc ) are very strong incomplete dominant ( some people call it Co dominant ) traits. Its my opinion that these strong traits simply erase eachother ( some erase more than others )& therefore all make some kind of erased snake ( Leucistics ). But I have now seen that if you add another trait it seems that the eraser doesnt work as well & that is why a bit of some pattern is left behind on the double homozygous Leucistics.
I think we have only seen the tip of the iceburg with the leucistic trait.

kinderman Nov 11, 2008 09:13 PM

I picked-up a Het Leucistic from your line that is also Het for Clown. I have been raising 4 Het Clown girls and I could not decide what to do with them -- I have decided!!!

What look should I expect from a Het VR Clown. Will the real visual payoff be down the road by way of a Leucy? I figure you are the man to ask. I am guessing one has not been done...unless you have something you have been hiding!!! Thanks for any insights Vin.

Too much repect for you to argue Vin, but didn't your first Blue Eyed Leucies have a 'white' stripe running from thr back oof the neck -i.e. a 'Ghost' stripe?
Eric Davies

vin russo Nov 12, 2008 03:43 PM

Yes - most blue eyed leucistics have some type of ghost vertebral white stripe that fades as they grow ( you can see it on the ball pictured in my previous post ). This is because they are "Eraded" balls & just like using an eraser on a pencil - you never erase everything. Same scenario occurrs with your Black Eyed lucy as some have orange splotches - but they tend not to fade.
Vin Russo

herpquest Nov 12, 2008 07:38 PM

Quitr right there Vin. If you can cast your mind back about six years, when 'some-one' posted a 'Photoshopped' pic of my first Blackeyed on their website, claiming that it was a completely unbleemished, white snake, I posted on here that it had two small yellow blemishes and was accused of ruining an expensive sales drive!!
Genuine respect Vin. Eric Davies

jyohe Nov 12, 2008 05:08 PM

.......Thanxx Vin

......your het is brighter than I thought it would be....better than fires and some other stuff (same with different name)....

.......as you said , yes ,,,the morphs erase a layer and the more layers off make it all white and no pattern etc etc etc...

....the Polar is cool......looks like the pattern is clear? and the pinkish purplish (depending on your eyes)....is the color of the muscle tissue shoing through....don't know if you agree.....it is sweet......we'll see how the color comes or goes as it grows.......wonder....hmmm....hopefully it won't turn more of an all white with age........ir become yellow....

.......(corn note....lavender -amel- anery....basically a snow opal triple morph.....they were born clear patterned on white....grew up really yellow patterned...hopefully balls are different....I think they are / will be .....)..Thanxx

Thanxx again......
