breeding issues?

bam171bam Nov 10, 2008 07:19 PM

I have a couple issues i was hoping someone could help me shed a little light on. I purchased a female retic from a reputable person, she is a 2003, she's a little over 20' and about 180lbs. I also have a 2004 bob clark male about 14 ft approx. 55lbs. When i put the male into the females cage she whips her tail(her cloacae is open), and thrashes around the cage. She essentially just bully's this guy around. I guess what i am asking is this normal behavior for big tics? Is it possible i have a 20 foot male. Or does she just not want to breed? She hasn't eaten for two months, they both just shed last week? The temps at about 90 day and 80 night. Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Jason

I don't have any experience with breeding retics, but I've heard that's the way females react when they're not interested in breeding. It could be the male, or she could just not be interested at all. Have you been cycling the snakes?

The day time temps are around 90 and night time temps in the low 80's....they are also on a light cycle. The tics are now just laying on top of each other. They thrashed around for about 10-12 hours. Thanks for the input.

She is not interested in breeding. Being a 2003 she is probably old enough but just not ready to go. Wait until she refuses to eat and then throw the male in and see what happens.

at over 20 feet she's definitely gotta be big enough. I've heard some people put the female into the male's cage, which may make her more open to it, but I don't know. I don't think you should leave the male in there if she's clearly not interested in him. It could lead some trouble. Good luck and let us know what works/doesn't work.

That's the thing...she has refused to eat for the last 2 months. She just shed, everything seems to be in place.

Drop the nightime temps to 75 - 77 F.... and try a bit of misting at night.

She is wagging her tail and most likely leaving blood trails because she is not ready..

Watch the male, when he first gets introduced to her does he crawl around the cage and up to her with short tongue flicks....like something is interesting to him. If they are just long meandering tongue flicks he may not be ready to breed or she is not giving of the right scent to get him going....

Cool 'em down a bit and mist them!

Big 20' snakes can be DIFFICULT to get good eggs from!!!!!

Too big and fat is BAD!!!!! THey can be miserable to breed...obese snakes stink!!!!!!
