Non-eating Geckos

football9755 Nov 11, 2008 08:42 PM

Hey I have two fully grown geckos that use to eat all the time. But since no stores around me sell mealworms because of the sortage, I have been getting superworms. They use to like them alot and eat alot of them. But lately they stopped eating them. I decided to try to switch their food to phoenix worms but they wont even try it. I dont know if it is because the weather is getting colder and they are going into hibernation or what. Any suggestions would help alot. Thank you

Not sure where your from but i would check around for mealworms. None of the big breeders have any but there seem to be a good bit from smaller breeders, you just have to find the right people. i work at a small petstore and we started getting mealworms back in about four months ago, and to my knowledge the big chain petstores ten miles down the road still dont have them yet. Also try herp shows, you can usually buy them by the thousands and just keep them in your fridge.

You can also look at various vendors online, a lot of them have mealies in stock now.

You can also try roaches or silkworms which are usually accepted with relish.

Could you give a full run down of your set up? - Tank size? - Substrate? - Temps? - How is it heated? - What are the supplements you are using? - Are the Leos male or female? -How many hides?

If everything in the set up is right, and the Leos are not loosing any weight then it may just be a seasonal funk. When my Leos go off feed i double check all my husbandry parameters, offer new prey items, and check their weight with a digital scale every couple of weeks to assure they arent loosing any weight.

I have a 3x1x1 foot cage, that fake looking grass carpet for substrate, temps 90-100, heated by undertank heater, 4 hides (2 dry and 2 wet)

90-100? This is a pretty big range. The adequate range for floor temps for Leos is 88-92 degrees.

I would get a better handle on those temps - are you measuring them with a digital thermometer?
