stupid question

tbone21 Nov 11, 2008 09:11 PM

Do caimans poop out the fur from the rodents? I am finding what looks like a bunch of little fur balls in the water?

I have seen american alligators regurgitate fur pellets, what you're seeing is probably the same.

What you're seeing is the regurgitated hair from the rodents. Crocodilians can't digest the hair from their prey items, so after it builds up over a period of time, they finally regurgitate it in pellet form. Perfectly natural and nothing to be alarmed about. Although, a water change after such happenings would be recommended.

Thank you all for you quick response. I am glad to hear the response to not worry. Besides the filter I took a fine mist net and cleaned them all out and will do a water change. Thanx again.

I feed mostly Mazuri, but will feed a rodent or quail a couple of times a month. With such a small quantity of whole prey, would the hair and feathers pass through with the feces?

goini04 Nov 14, 2008 06:56 AM

Most likely not, but, it most likely won't cause regurgitation as quickly either at that amount. It just takes a little longer. Likewise, I feed mostly a staple Mazuri diet, but also feed a rodent here and there. It simply takes a longer while before the fur is regurgitated.

Thanks...I was just curious because I don't think I've ever seen a sudden influx of rodent hair. Actually, I have seen a bit of hair once, but assumed it was just a recent bm. I've never seen a sign of that missing suction cup, either. I think it may have buddy in there somewhere. No feathers, either. One of these days this gator is going to have a massive regurg.

thecrocpot Nov 15, 2008 08:57 PM

Yes, hair and feathers can be passed completely through the digestive tract (especially small amounts as you describe).
