Freaking about mites.

stormwulf133 Nov 11, 2008 09:23 PM

A few days ago our normal corn snake was sitting in her water bowl, odd i thought but noticed she was out of water (she is good at knocking things about) so I didn't think of much of it. I still checked her for mites and checked temps because I knew those could be problems. Nothing out of the ordinary So, today was feeding day. I went to get her out and noticed she had black spots in the water bowl. I am not sure if it is mites or what. I sprayed the cage with PAM just in case. I sprayed her with Reptirelief, wiped her with a white paper towel. I couldn't find anything on her, the towel, or in the rubbermaid tub that I put her in. Not a thing. Nothing crawling on my arms, as I put her back in her cage either.

So I pull out the tub that our new creamsicle corn is in. Mind you she is in a different area under quarantine. She is sitting in her water bowl. I notice what may be a single black spot in her water bowl. Again, not sure if it was a mite. I had treated her tub the first day I got her as well as sprayed her with Repti-relief the first day like I do with any new snakes. When I noticed her strange behavior I mopped the bottom of her tub with a white paper towel and again got NOTHING. What are the chances I am dealing with mites? I cant find anything on anyone else. All tubs are treated with Provent-A-Mite from day 1. Most of my collection is fairly new and under quarantine as it is, but I have been super careful.

Usually when they have mites there are multiple in the water.
Check the fold of skin on her chin - they hide in there.

Be very careful with mite treatment.

I don't use prevent-a-mite anymore. When I find a mite (rarely happens, only occasionally with new acquisitions or WC lizards) - I set up a new enclosure, wipe the snake or lizard down with reptile relief, and that's the end of it.

I took some of the black specs I found to the vet. They looked at them under the scope. Dirt. I am still paranoid. How does anyone who is as OCD as me do this?
