home-made tanks?

songwriter Nov 12, 2008 07:14 AM

Well, in the hope of finding the snake, my son is starting to come around to my idea of building a bigger tank for his Ball rather than buying a bigger fish tank. I came up with a corner thing and he came up with a wall unit...;>

His has 2 10 gallon fish tanks, one on top & one on the bottom with the 'middle' space open & shelves for storage and 2 tall side tanks - all 'four' joined or open to each other (as if there's any room in his room for either version!).

I've been looking at other concepts on the net (for sale & home-made on this & other forums) but would appreciate any comments on your own setups, what works, what doesn't, how many Balls per tank, bedding, cleaning problems and other things I can't think of etc.

Thanks,
-Jim

Ah, sorry, I completely missed the 'cage' forum section!
So much to read, so much to learn, so little time.
I was completely 'snake-free' prior to my son getting his ball and now I know more than he does...
Very cool stuff!

You only put one ball per tank. Ever. Except during breeding of course. Your son's design looks nice and more efficient if you plan on getting more balls. However, the 10 gal tanks will not last long. Adults, especially females, will need much larger enclosures.

Although rack systems aren't always that visually attractive, they're far more space efficient. They have several perks including the ability to heat several tubs with one heat strip. You can do google searches and youtube searchs for a tutorial of how to build one. I just built one about a month ago. 200 bucks for everything. I'm using 1/5th the space than before, and I still have room for SEVERAL more snakes in the rack.

ive given thoughts to making a rack system myself.
although i only have the two lil ones, i want MORE! lol
so im thinking of attempting to build my own. and of course was planning on using plastic tubs...
but my concern is heating- the heating tape wont warp the plastic and still keep them warm enough?

ive already mentioned to my bf that maybe i should just have a separate building just for snakes- LOLOL.
i think he thinks im crazy. HA! perhaps....

New to balls - what is the reason behind "one ball only" per enclosure? I am interested in learning more about my guys Thanks!

My boyfriend works in finish carpentry & is making me an eye-catching corner unit for my 2 favorites. It's taking a bit of time considering the cost of materials but I'll be happy to share when it's done. It will look a bit like your corner design except 2 levels (one for each snake) with a small storage area. We *may* even incorporate a small freezer to keep the rats in if it doesn't jeopordize heating.
