How are...

Bloods with temperament? I've heard they can be snippy, they hiss, and when they reach 6 feet, can be somewhat intimidating. I have my eye on one but not sure if I want an angry snake. Opinions?

Hey Patrick,

Yes there is a vast difference between bloods (all types) and say balls. These are a more alert snake, watching and waiting. I have one snitty male, but even with his slight attitude issues, a calm quiet area with a proper tight secure hide works the best. I have noticed when I move up in caging that the snake MUST be big enough to feel secure or they get snitty.

The stories of the all out aggressive bloods of old are just that old stories. Yeah some can be hellfires, but over all they are just a more alert snake. I think thats the best way I can describe it. I have 5 here and each one has a distinct routine and personality for dealing with it. Oddly enough my adult WC is the most mellow of the bunch!

I would suggest getting a blood from a good breeder with a known reputation rather than just anyone selling bloods. Many breeders these days are breeding both for beauty and temperment. I would also suggest going this route to ensure what you get is a captive bred baby. I also would NEVER suggest a blood as an initial snake. First a ball to feel the python girth and then a colubrid for the alertness and activity. Even something such as a corn.

I really appreciate your response. I've previously owned Rosy Boas and I currently own a Ball. I feel confident enough to take a step up to the plate. I hope I don't get too bloody, haha. I'm located in Southern California, but I hate to ship animals very far because of induced stress. May you suggest a well-known breeder closer to the west coast? Thanks a bunch.

The Barkers are in Texas, which is much closer to you. They are one of the forums sponsors as well. Click the VPI button up top. Most of the breeders that are coming to mind are Midwest area. IL, OH, KY, AR. I'm sure I'm missing a few, hopefully some other forum folks can come up with others names on the west coast, because I am brain locked on Midwest and east coast when I think of names.
