Yellow Fungus diease.......

johnnyg Sep 08, 2003 02:23 AM

I had to change my user name and this pstwas removed the moderator saved my post and reply cause it was so important I am now posting it again but adding some more things I noticed...

My what I beleive to be 3 month old dragon(8 inches STL)might have Yellow Fungus Disease I purchased him at a petsMart where this disease is coming from in mass numbers. He has developed the yellow around his vent and his eyes have what I beleived to be a problem shedding for weeks but only until seeing the dragon named MO on beautifuldragons.com who had yellow fungus, I now think it is that also his ears do not look normal outside and inside, On the outter parts of the ear and around it is being covered with very noticable rough skin which give the ear a hole a smaller look and on the Inside his ears are dark and don't look normal. When I first purcased him I noticed this somewhat but it has only got worse in these last 6 weeks or so and now I am informed of what it might be. Does anybody have information to inform me of what else this might be also does anybody recomend a good vet in southern california around the orange county and LA County area? I have print out the page on reptilerooms.com about yellow fungus in bearded dragons and when I go I will take it to the vet. How fresh does a Fecal sample have to be fresh? Last can anybody give me an idea on how much this vet visit will cost?

This is to inform everyone.

please consult with a Vet prior to treating a dragon you think may have this, many illness, parasites and worms can cause a dragon to express a yellow coloration through the skin/scales.

Lamisil cost about $10, nolvasan the vet has and will usually give it to you if they use it in cleaning at their clinic or for just a few dollars. nolvasan is safe internally and around eyes, I would only use the lamisil when you can place it directly on the area with a q-tip, not into the eye.

Nolvasan comes in a shampoo and in a concentate(you dilute this 1:30) you use it as a bath soak, the lamisil you can put on with your finger, cotton ball or q-tip to the affected areas and extend about a 1/2 out from it.

The fungus can spread to other reptiles, just wash between handling them AND anything they com into contract with. The fungus does not look like normal skin, only way I can describe it is like a thin gummy skin thta does not shed properly.

BE prepared and don't freak out, if it is a fungal infection, the longer the fungus was there the deeper it is and if into tissue, the area is going to be debriefed by the nolvasan and the dragon may lose skin/scales. If it is advanced, you may see angry red sores when they skin/scales come off....... the nolvasan is not causing it.... they were already dead. The sores will normally heal to a nice pink healthy color after treatment.

www.herpvetconnection.com for a vet in your area or www.anapsid.com if you can not find one on the vet connection site

PetSmart was one of the first locations this started coming from in mass. I do not know where they get their dragons from now, but when it first started they were coming from Reptile Republic aka Fluker Farms. They claim they do not buy from there anymore due to this and other diseases. Most likely, dragons that have come through their warehouse and stores the past 18 months are infected with this UNLESS they are getting them from a local breeder and unless they cleaned up the tanks real well prior to adding another group of dragons to them.

We do not know if it is coming from contact with other dragons with it, soil they are raised on, horrible husbandry at the breeder/store or if they maybe were treated with antibiotics prior to shipping to the stores.
