Black Tailed Cribo Care?

JSI11 Nov 13, 2008 10:37 AM

Well I might be getting my first Drymarchon this weekend. I'm trying to find some useful care info on them.

Any advice or husbandry details people would like to share?

Thanks

Jeremy

The cage perimeter should be one and a half times the length of the longest snake in the cage. Also, most commerical breeders keep their animals in those rubbermaid storage tubs, But in my opinion "Pet type" Indigo/cribos will be happier in a tall, side vented, wood cage with a heating mat (12" X 16" stuck to the bottom on either end, but located under a hidebox measuring (at least 4" tall) and 12" x 16" with a 3" x 3" hole (for double snake access, like going in and out at the same time.) and the hidebox should be placed on top of 3 Inch deep aspen bedding. If your cage is set up like this with a light inside and a clear glass front you will see your cribo out all day and in the "parascope" position, especially if your snake room has windows to see to the sunlight outside. The mid-level venting on the cages sides allows a cross current of air outside of their draftless hideboxes, this draws the snakes to the cage center with their nose's up. also take your snake outside on sunny days and let him bask on the ground for ten or twenty minutes, he/it will learn to love it when ever you take him out. good luck J!

Thanks, I'm pretty sure I read that same response somewhere else Although I think it was about Pinesnakes. If their care is similar to Pituophis than I should be fine. (I've got Blackpines and Gophers already)

I've seen some other keepers Drymarchon setups so I've got some good examples to go off of.

Thanks again for the info

Jeremy

I know in florida that pinesnakes and indigos are indeed, both found in tortoise holes that are located in sandhills and flatwoods, so cage requirements are very much the same. Also deep bedding is much appreciated during shedding phase.
