Wild Bite vs Captive Bite

bakeaway Nov 13, 2008 12:24 PM

I am heading out to do some field herping this weekend. Have not done it since i was much younger....
I was wondering if a bite from a non venom snake in the wild has any dangers? I have been bitten by captice bred,,,but not wild.
Just wondering...

Thanks

Nah... just bring some of the anti-bacterial gel. Only thing I can think of a tooth breaking off inside your skin and becoming infected.

I have been bitten by many wild snakes over the years and I've never experienced any problems from these bites. When I was younger, I used to not even worry about cleaning the bites. These days, I usually try to clean off the bite with some kind of antiseptic upon arriving at home. The risk of infection from non-venomous bites is overplayed in my opinion. Beware, many species of Nerodia and Thamnophis(along with other similar species) possess an anticoagulant in their saliva which often causes it to bleed excessively. This often instills the person who was bitten with a fear that the snake may have been venomous, even when the snake appeared harmless.

Good luck,
Justin
