Repeated regurgitation

jmartin104 Nov 13, 2008 01:50 PM

I have a hatchling that has had about 5 meals from rats to mice and all sizes. It does not hold anything down. It regurgitates withing 3 or so days. The snake is gaining weight however, although, small.

Ideas?

Has it pasted any waste or urates? Could it be that it's digestive tract did not form properly?

That is a bummer, I'm sorry I don't have any ideas...

Check to see if there are any hard spots in the belly. If there was any of the yolk sac remaining undigested this would cause a hard spot, and a blockage. If that is the case try soaking it for a day or so in some luke warm water, this may allow the muscles to relax enough to pass the blockage. This is no guarantee that it will fix it but it can't hurt. I had this happen to a hatchling but the blockage was too big to pass and the baby did eventually die. I have also had hatchlings that were just that spooked by daylight for like the first 3 months of their life that I had to keep them in total darkness in that time frame. They were also regurgitating anything they ate. This did work but the baby is now over a year old and still a finicky eater, but he doesn't regurgitate his food anymore.

Hope this helps.

I hope that works for You also, I had an Albino I was trying to fix for a Friend and I did all that she kepted doing the same. Then one day she kepted it down over 2 days ,but the lump was bigger then before. Later that day she passed. I think sometimes You run into an Animal that just can not Digest food.

Good luck in getting Yours to pull though, You might want to want a week or 2 ,its so hard on them to regurgate there meals.

I would first give a treatment of Flagyl. Flagyl works on protozoans in the stomach. Two treatments two weeks apart. See if that helps. I use liquid Flagyl at a dosage of 200 mg/kg. Are you feeding an appropriate sized meal? Too large of a meal can cause a regurge problem.

Honestly if it has eaten and held down a meal before,I would not feed for 2 weeks atleast. You said its gaining weight,so it should be ok to go 3 weeks with out food. Theres something about a baby that keep Regurging, its like they need a rest from food for a bit. I wouldn't give a baby flagel. Wait 3 weeks I know its hard to do but its best for the snake. Then feed it a very small meal and this is very important make sure it has heat to help it digest its meal... I would be willing to bet You that snake will come around

The one I was talking about above , I don't think ever held down a meal... Nothing to it ,but to do it..." J " Let Me know if that worked in a month.

Hello Jay. Give him a dose of flagyl. Sometimes, for one reason or another, a snake may regurge. And then SOMETIMES (only seen it a few times), you see this regurging pattern. The bacteria in your snake is all out of whack, and flagyl, followed by a week to rest will do the trick......
