OT: Couture vs Lesnar

Jonathan_Brady Nov 13, 2008 11:54 PM

One of the truly great things about this forum is the MMA fans who come here and the mods that allow us to have a rare conversation OT about MMA. I'm so appreciative to the members and mods!! Thank you all!

So, I'm curious to see what you guys think is gonna happen Saturday night.

I like both fighters, a lot. I like Couture better and I have never picked him to lose a fight. He is, IMO, the SMARTEST fighter ever in MMA and a true living legend. But, with this fight, I just don't know that he can beat Lesnar. Lesnar is SO big, and SO strong and his background is so similar to Couture's, that I don't think Couture can pull this out. I hope he can! I REALLY DO! I just don't know...

Frank Mir was able to beat Lesnar because he's one of the best BJJ guys in MMA and he seized an opportunity against an EXTREMELY inexperienced fighter. I don't know that Couture has a skill set that is so overdeveloped compared to Lesnar. I also don't know that Couture has the strength to knock Lesnar's block off!?! But it will be interesting to see how Lesnar takes a hard shot to the face. I don't believe we've seen that yet, right?

IMO, the only chance for Couture to beat him is by winning 3 of the 5 rounds.

I do believe that if Lesnar continues to develop his skills, that he'll be unbeatable for several years. He's going to be a superstar, no doubt.

I can't call it... I've never routed for Couture to lose and I can't start now. But I also don't see how he can finish the fight. I guess my prediction will be that if Couture doesn't get knocked out (he's definitely been KO'd before and Lesnar is quick and VERY strong), he'll end up winning on the judges score cards.

Thoughts? Predictions?

This fight will not go 5 rounds. Lesnar is too big and I am not sure he is in as good as shape as Randy is as far as Cardio. Being that muscular takes quite lot of energy. I think Lesnar will make a stupid move and Randy will get him to the ground and submit him.

I wrote of Randy on the Silvia fight(ooops) and I think that Silvia was a pretty tough opponent. And looking back on Lesnar/Mir...Lesnar didn't have ANY power in his punching. Just cause your big doesn't mean you know how to hit hard. Maybe he worked on some technique after losing to Mir.

Should be an interesting fight though and I definitely would like for Randy to win. He is the classiest fighter and the #1 legend of MMA.....hands down.

Either submission or knockout by Randy in the late first or early 2nd round.....LOL

ceniceros Nov 14, 2008 03:16 AM

This is a tough one for me to choose... Skill wise goes to randy for sure but man lesnar is a beast. If brock can stay busy when the fight goes to the ground he may be able to finish couture, not like last time when he fought heath herring and just stayed on top of him the whole time. He gots to let his hands go for some ground and pound.

Randy is one of the smartest fighters and doesnt run out of gas, so if he finish the fight or go to the judges he can win too. Tough call for sure and i will be watching for sure.

Great thread JB. You know i love MMA.

Thanks Richard. I always enjoy starting my day off jealous of something... JERK! lol

Silva is probably the best MMA fighter we've ever seen. I wouldn't have stopped grinning for days!

Congrats,

CCS Nov 14, 2008 03:38 AM

He broke Herring's orbital bone, he hits hard enough for me. I think this is a poor match up for Couture. Lesnar should win this one and get submitted or knocked out by Noguiera after he beats Mir.

Chris

Jonathan_Brady Nov 14, 2008 06:55 AM

Lesnar has a LOT of power in his punching, he even displayed it against Mir. Mir didn't voluntarily go the ground around 40 seconds into the first round. Lesnar dropped him with his first standing punch that the threw, and then pounced on him. Same thing happened with Herring.

Whenever Couture has fought gigantic men (especially recently), they've usually been huge not because of pure muscle, but because of muscle and fat. Lesnar is huge because of muscle. And he has to cut weight to make it into the heavyweight division!!

I don't think Couture will be able to control him like the other big men he's thrown around and dominated. Both Sylvia and Gonzaga could stand to lose 20-25 lbs of fat! Maybe more for Sylvia!

If Couture can avoid Lesnars monstrous hands and power (like he did against Sylvia), he'll do great. But can he avoid his lightning quick hands for 25 minutes??? I don't think he can. But I hope that he can!

Personally I think Lesnar needs to get far more experience before he can beat someone like Randy. Perhaps a bit down the road. Lesnar is big as all hell and powerful, but Randy has the years of training. If this were to go any distance, I think that gives Couture a definite advantage as well, once again because he has the experience.

Personally I am waiting for the two matts to fight. Those boys just dont like each other.

Just watch for Randy to get one of those little tiny toothpick legs that Brock has and that will be it. He will tap out faster than the speed of light when that happens. The really great fighters will take a lot more pain before they toss in the towel. I predict, Randy in less than two minutes.

In his fight with Mir he showed some inexperience. I think Randy has a good chance. I hope he wins I would like to see him take on Nog after Nog takes Mir down a peg or two. I used to like Mir, but his ego is immense. I might be partial to Nog he owns the gym my buddy trains at. But I like all Mma Pic of me and Nog and also me and Henderson at Elite xc. The last Elite Xc. When Kimbo got knocked out.

Say, is NOG the son of Charles Bronson or what? Looks just like him, plus Bronson was a "tough guy" in his own right back in the day.

I think no matter which way this goes, it's going to be an exciting fight.

If it ends due to knockout or submission... it'll be heart racing and EXCITING!!!
If it goes 5 rounds, it's going to be 5 action packed, brutal, bloody rounds!.. heart racing for 30 minutes! EXCITING!!!

lol

Fingers crossed for Couture!

......BIGGIE SMALLS IS ALIVE!!! (the guy in the background)

Couture wants to go to the ground. He is too smart to stand in front of Lesnar's rocket powered bowling ball sized fists. I think he will be able to handle him on the ground.

Couture all the way. Lesnars hand size doesnt matter, Mike Tyson had real small hands and he was knocking people out left and right.

Former heavy weight champ Lennox Lewis fist measurement is 12". So is George Foreman's who punched like a mule kick. Mike Tyson's fist measurement was 13" and in his heyday, before he signed on with Don King, he wasn't playing pattycake. So small fisted Mike he was not. Simple logic tells you that a bigger fist means greater power behind a punch and Brock's ham hock fists will be like clubs if he is able to connect. But still, my money is on the old man. Same as it was in the election the other day, so what do I know?

One big factor Randy has going for him, he's extremely intelligent in the fight game, and Brock is a bonafide moron. (look at him getting run out of the NFL, he has the physical skills but was too stupid to make it, nearly costing a couple people their careers since he was incapable of listening to instruction). If Randy can avoid the early barrage he should be able to get Brock in a situation he can't recover from. Atleast I hope so lol.

I know of 3 heavyweights that can take out randy couture.

1. Fedor
2. Josh Barnett
3. Big Noguiera

My heart and brain say 2 different things. My heart wants Randy to win but my brain says Lesnar will win. Randy beat and overrated Tim Sylvia and a Gabriel Gonzaga that has sunk out of title contention. It took 5 rounds for Randy to beat Tim and it only took Fedor 30 sum seconds. He beat Gabriel Gonzaga but then again so did Werdum and he is now out of the UFC for crappy performances. Randy was knocked out by Liddell twice and Lesnar has to hit much harder. Randys weaknesses have also been wrestlers, he showed that when he had back to back losses with Barnett and Rodriguez. I think Randys only chance to win is by submitting Brock but Randy has only won 2 fights by subs in his whole career. I do think if it goes 5 rounds it will go to Lesnar as he has shown he can easily win 3. With that said Randy is great on creating and implementing a good game plan. I think that in order for Randy to win he needs to get Brock in the clinch and do a little dirty boxing. If he smothers Brock and keeps under hooks on him I think Brock might get frustrated and become sloppy. I don’t think Randy will be able to get Lesnar on his back so I’m thinking that Randy may try to get Lesnar to expose his back to him and he will jump and try to sink in his hooks and we may see a standing rear naked choke.

It's sad Lesnar didn't play football this guy had the potential to the next Tony Mandrich or who knows maybe even another Brian Bosworth .

lol, the really sad part, Brock has the physical ability to be a great football player, but the Vikings (and everyone else) weren't willing to risk it due to his stupidity.

Too bad he beat Randy tonight hopefully Nog spanks him in a few months.

Give Brock a year or so and he will be UNSTOPABLE!!!!!!! He is a FREAK!!!!!!

Joe

Randall_Turner Nov 16, 2008 05:11 PM

With that freak status I wonder if he will test positive for performance enhancing drugs. He blew a gasket when asked about it by ESPN. My guess though is he is on the difficult to impossible (at this point) to trace stuff if he is juicing.

I agree. I hope (for the sports sake) he isn't still, but it doesn't seem to be more then a few months between fairly recognizable names getting busted for it.

I don't think there's any question both Lesnar and Couture are juicing.

Ernie Eison
Westwood Acres Reptile farms Inc.

vfr Nov 18, 2008 12:39 PM

I would be very surprised if either of them are juiced. They both know that the Nevada State Athletic Committee will be testing before and after the fight. Just because they are good athletes does not mean they are juiced. Neither of them would be that stupid to have part of their purse taken along with the title belt and have them be all over the media about it. This is not the WWE and is a regulated sport.

Randall_Turner Nov 18, 2008 11:09 PM

With that said, it isn't uncommon for fairly high profile fighters to test positive, stupid yes, unlikely, maybe, but wouldn't be surprised. Sean Sherk and Tim Silvia both have tested positive (Sherk multiple times) in the past few years, and those are the only 2 that I can remember off the top of my head.

vfr Nov 19, 2008 12:05 PM

NUMEROUS fighters have tested positive for unapproved performance enhancing supplements but in regards to high profile fighters, it is VERY rare. Randy has NEVER tested positive and Brock has fought a total of 4 times (3 in the UFC) and has not tested positive once. It sucks that people just start discrediting fighters like nothing. Also, another point, the UFC has recently started coming down hard on fighters with dirty results so people may not be willing to risk it now.

wstreps Nov 19, 2008 04:08 PM

Steroids are very prevalent in all sports . Have been since the 70`s . It's a running joke . Beating testing is simple . Guys get caught because they beat the test so many times they get lazy or someone wants them caught. Things get covered up all the time. What sucks is how protected the athletes are . Everyone will lie thru their teeth . The UFCs stance is just part of the game.

wstreps Nov 15, 2008 09:18 AM

Are they still trying to pass this stuff off as a professional sport ? Brock Lesnar ? The WWE guy ? Fighting one of MMA's legends after what two fights and a record of 1 and 1. There's money to made off of spectacle`s. That's what packer label Don King AKA Dana White counts on.

The sad thing is it doesn't take an athlete to beat someone up so a clumsy slow guy like Lesnar can win. I remeber when Lesnar talked about how he was as good an athlete as a lot of guys in the NFL a couple weeks later he was wrestling in a Godzilla match in Japan.

Overall this should be an entertaining spectacle to watch I think both guys are equally slow and uncoordinated not to mention lead with their face so.............I give Couture a slight edge just because he's got his cycle down and Lesnar can't throw a clean punch. Also I've seen how little it takes to throw Lesnar off. The flip side like I said it doesn't take an athlete to beat someone up so a clumsy slow guy like Lesnar can win.

Sun_King Nov 15, 2008 06:04 PM

But I think he will be DESTROYED by Lesnar. He is just to big, quick and POWERFUL to be stopped. Give Brock a year or two and he will be unstoppable. I do like Randy's heart and will power but do not think it will be enough tonight.....

Joe

This man was a national champion heavyweight wrestler at the University of Minn. His overall record in college was 106-5. Sounds pretty darn good to me.
