Genetics Question

NYCMedic Nov 14, 2008 08:46 AM

I Have a clutch of eggs incubating right now. The Mother is a "normal" beardie and the male is a Red phase sandfire. What will the babies be considered. Would any of them come out red or will they all just be het for red phase. Are they more likely to be the normal phase because the fem is XX so sh would be the dominant one having more X's? Sorry if I sound stupid but I never got genetics down pat.
Thanks

Red Phase in bearded dragons is not passed on recessively or co-dominately... It is a polygenic trait which means it can be bred out if bred to normal phase dragons over a period of time and generations. Like the previous poster stated, there will more than likely be some of the dragons that turn out like mom and some that turn out like dad. However, if you want to breed for red, it would be beter to breed two red dragons together. That breeding would turn out with more vived reds along with a higher ratio of red dragons as opposed to a normal/red breeding. That is how a polygenic trait works. Hope this helps.
