Beyond hybrids?

HerpZillA Nov 14, 2008 02:03 PM

I'm not sure how this applies, but I was reading an article someone sent me on blue roses. they "implant" a gene from a blue panzie. I have no idea when in its maturation nor how.

But, is this far off for animals? Or is it here?

http://www.geekologie.com/2008/11/20_years_of_research_for_this.php

Someday the pet shop will have a genetic booth on how you want your snake. Maybe sales on less popular genes?

I'm not sure I'm impressed with the future.

Kinda fits in with the tattooed fish and the glow in the dark fish .... they even made glow in the dark kitty cats. If they can tattoo a fish, why not snakes? it just depends on what you consider "scientific" or "animal abuse". Personally i think tattooing an animal or forcing jellyfish genes into another animal is abuse, but others think its "cool". i believe the glow in the dark fish are illegal in some parts if not all of california but they sell them everywhere here in VA. from petsmart, petco, pop and pop stores even walmart!!

illegal in Ca ,,,sold in 49 states.....
that's what they just said on TV last weekend.

....glow in the dark mice have been made too......

I had trans gender mice...not xx or xy but xxy chromosomes I think.....I have no idea why and they looked all normal to me..they were just all mixed in with the mutts I breed....

yes, someday they will make animals different colors than they should be by mutating and /or adding stuff from other critters....

....take blue dart frogs and add their color to ball pythons.....dark blue pythons would be cool......or easier...take grey bands and take away some of the grey and make them bluer and bluer more naturally actually..

corns....take away all color but the orange....how bright would that be....glowing orange.......

.etc etc etc

I studied that XXY chromosome in ny genetics class years ago. but in people. XYY is called superman I think? They found XXYY XXXYYY and all other combos in ppl. Some of the videos of the people made you realize how lucky you are. One guy had arms that reached to past his knees. Old old film, probably not even allowed to be show because it is not PC anymore. But it was interesting.

Blue. Hmmpff. Thats nothing special.
When they make a real black rose, now thats something. As it is, they have to spray-paint them black.

Seriously, the blue roses are very pretty, but black is my favorite.

As far as snakes, I am sure the more people mess with science, the more they will discover. Someday you will be able to custom make your kid.

misty-

i've seen some black roses... they have a purple tint to them.. similar to the black tulips. Very pretty... VERY rare. Extremely expensive. the only bad thing about black flowers is each year the color fades and turns either blue or purple fading to a lavender color after a few years. but i'm sure someone out there is working on making the colors stay longer.

Misty,I have to agree, black roses are cool! I have black irises in the spring. Jeff

Heya Misty,
As far as black roses I agree although they are getting close. One of the varieties of roses I grow has bud that are black and when the flower opens it is an extremely dark red color often with black looking edges. Unfortunately it has no scent so I am planing on cross polinating it in the future with one of my other roses that has tons of scent but red/black buds with dark red flowers. The darker variety with no scent is black baccarra(hybrid T) and the scented one is don juan(climber).

Unfortunately it is, just as with bluish or lavender roses, almost impossible to get a good idea of the color from pictures. Lighting affects the picture drastically and some varieties produce different colors based on growth conditions such as acidity/alcalinity of the soil. My suggestion for our area would be to check the Capitol Nursery in Elk Grove when the roses start to flower. That store keeps a very large selection and when they start to flower you can check them all out first hand.

Sean.

If they had trully black roses, I would have my whole yard boardered in them.
I may have to check out the nursery and see if they have anything dark-dark. I like the blood red ones as well, but not as much as black.

** ...On topic - How cool would it be to take pictures of your corns on black roses, or black rose petals! Very neat, IMO.

Hey, if we could genetically pic the color of the corn snake, what color would people pic?
I would start with an all black one. Then maybe black with blue saddles!

Any other ideas?

I think blue with green saddles would be cool looking.
