UTH & Plastic Shoebox

everywomanshero Nov 14, 2008 04:20 PM

I am looking at a hatchling Pueblan Milksnake. I have a 4 watt flukers heat pad. Can I use this with a plastic shoebox or one of those critter cages for the first year or so or will it melt the plastic?

If you use a light dimmer (plug the UTH in the dimmer, dimmer into the wall) then you can prevent overtemperature.

Home stores sell lamp dimmers that plug into the wall and require no self-wiring. They are called tabletop dimmers. About $10. Do that and you are set.

Use a substrate like Eco-Earth, slightly moist and you are really set.

My heater is a 4 watt flucker minni heat pad. Would I need a dimmer for that or does it even get hot enough to melt a shoebox anyway? I'm not sure if this thing even puts out enough heat to maintain the box at the current temp. Has anyone else used the mini?

Use a dimmer. The watt density of the mini is the same as for the larger heat pads, just less square area.
