I love Juno animals. She looks great. Love those bold black blotches/bands.
Such a love/hate relationship with that road (fm163).
Congrats on your new female. In my book, she is a 10.
Best Wishes,
Steven X

Thanks Steven,
Your animal looks mighty nice as well. It's nice to see all the different variations and to be able to share insight with the experts.

Juno was my first love... (Alterna)... I hunted there many many nights. I would never consider myself an expert. I only know what I know.
Congrats on your female and let us know if you have any questions or concerns.
Best Wishes,
Steven X

Steven,
Very nice JR female man...Is that one from the field?
Also, do any of yours demonstrate "orange" within the interstitial skin? Just wondering...
Later,
Jim.
PS: This is one of my breeder males...On 10/25/08 he weighed 582 grams and is 49.25 inches in length...

The first Juno I collected had loads of orange dispersed within the grey. Gave the snake an overall bluish look. Not typical blue, just a bluish look. Some animals have that trait and look buckskin (in my opinion).
Your Juno looks great. Juno really has some neat dark phase animals. I have seen some WC animals that were alterna phase with crescent orange wedges on a dark background. Phenominal...
Best Wishes,
Steven X
Steven,
Thanks man...Is that animal you posted in the photo above progeny from RB? This is a 2005 pair (female top photo) from him...
Later,
Jim.

Yes, I picked up several Juno's from RB. The two females died (not his fault). 1 a year later the other last spring. The male is awesome and growing really fast. My goal is to have a foundation of cut specific animals. I just have not had the time to get around to it. Working with other localities right now.
Thanks for your response.
Best Wishes,
Steven X
Steven,
No worries...Your "black" alterna is exquisite! I like it as well...Thanks for posting that photo earlier on down the forum page...
I envy y'all out there in Texas that can work on "cut specific" localities...

Jim.

Lance and I share our collection. We have a few Alterna that are not cut specific. (RR's,Juno, xmas). The rest are pretty much full on locality. Sanderson East and North, Sheffield, 277, Langtry, Ho-draw. Damn I love alterna.
My problem is that I like everyone one of them. Dark, Light, muddy, brown, young, old, small, large, etc...
As I have said before "I HAVE NEVER SEES AN UGLY ALTERNA!"...
Thanks for your comments!

even vader??

Even Vader... Trust me when your out west for two weeks and you have not seen a damn thing and then VADER pops into your headlamp. You are screaming, you are jumping, you are dribbling... The fact that you just observed VADER never comes into play.
Hope all is well Mike. I hope that you and your family have a SAFE and Happy holiday season!
Best Wishes,
Steven X
I just utilized "Damn Thing" to put emphasis on not observing anything... The words were not used to be offensive.
Happy Holidays!
Steven X
(I just re-read the post again and thought.. that could be taken the wrong way)
No worries at all Steve.. No offense was taken.
Have a safe and Happy Holiday!

Steven,
Me too...I just never have enough money for this! Ha! Ha! Living in the Southeast just doesn't grant any opportunities for collecting out there...Used to be stationed at Fort Sill (twice) and did a couple of short hauls at Hood for FTX's...So when I was out there...I unfortunately had other things going on...I unfortunately saw many DOR's on the trails on post...
Snake-vs-Tracked vehicle = Not good for snake (or any other life for that matter-Some drivers were afraid of herps)...
I really envy y'all out there...Hope you have a good and safe Thanksgiving...
Later,
Jim.
PS: Got anymore photos of your "blacks"?

Many Apologies... One thing about Lance and I is that we really are not "bad" hunters(observers) for Alterna. However we lack photography skills... (to put it bluntly) So this means we dont have a lot of pictures of the snakes in our collection. We have some really nice animals. The black on grey female is getting even darker now. My guess is that she will end up black on black or almost black on black. Either way I will be very happy. The original male from 277 is black on black with white pinstripes. He is an awesome snake.
Sorry to hear you have not had the opportunity to really look for critters while in Texas. I hope you get the time. Really is out of this world for herps. I also hope that we still have the rights to look for them. Never know these days.
Thanks for all your feedback! Happy Holidays to you and family!
Best Wishes,
Steven X

Steven,
No worries man...I fumble with the camrea as well but I manage to get a photo od two when they want to pose (usually with a mouth full of mouse or quail)...
Your "black" specimen is exquisite! The orange really jumps out at you! If you decide to "downsize" some offspring next year...I'd be interested...
Yeah, that recent state legislation out there is a real mess...Especially how it was passed...That was sad to read about.
Thanks...I hope your bird (and trimmings) is tasty whether it's from the oven or the fryer! Ahhhhh...And then it's time for the football games...
Later,
Jim.

Steve, you're right about that. I've collected a bunch and bought even more but the ones that I bought will never mean as much to me as the collected ones. I've also noticed that lots of people appreciate them more once they've been to the Trans Pecos region. Even the purchased animals are appreciated more.

I love those pics with the bites! Nothing like getting the bite. They do it every time. Some people say only the females do it but my experience is they all do it. At least the ones I have picked up.
Congrats! That animal is gorgeous. Right now I have the dark phase curse. (even though I don't consider it a curse)
Best Wishes and Happy Holidays,

That snake is a 277 female collected in 2006. My son and I spotted her two days after finding a light blairs male with a black head. Both snakes weren't adult size yet. I found a male Juno that bit the heck out of me. Sorry but no graphic pics to post. lol

Steve,
That's cool...One of my Juno females samples her human keeper when she gets the chance...Ha! Ha!
Although the mexicanas (leonis/thayeri) have my primary focus right now, I think the alterna are beautiful animals as well when the acquisition budget allows me to acquire from y'all lucky enough to collect out there...Which is limited right now...Bummer!
Later,
Jim.
