Viewing leos at night.

Omnivorous Nov 15, 2008 02:20 AM

Is there any night bulbs that produce little to almost no heat that can be used to view my leo at night? Something that wont screw him up. If I keep the lights on in my room at night too much he wont come out and stays in his hide until the lights go out. I heard black lights can be bad for them. I have an adjustible heat lamp stand so mabie something that produces almost no heat and I can put the lamp as far away from the cage as possible just to be able to look at him and stuff at night. I dont want to mess his eyes up or screw his rythm up. Or is its just thats the breaks gotta deal with it? I dont know. Ideas?

You can use a red light bulb - they sell them at reptile stores (probably at home depot, etc too) which produce a low level of red light but still allow for viewing. There is some question as to whether or not they disrupt the night time cycle of your leo. With baking lizards such as bearded dragons these are a big no no because they definately disrupt the cycle - with leos it appears not to be so definite. I would think that it does disrupt it somewhat, although they still tend to come out at night with one on...

If you want to view your Leo for a bit at night i would go with a red light and leave it on for a couple hours then turn it off when you go to bed and let him have the whole night to himself

In my experience leos don't seem to mind a normal red light bulb at all.

When I was a kid I would use "black lights" and those didn't seem to disturb them either (but I can't be certain about if they can actually see it or not).
