Roadhunting (driving little-used roads at night) is a good way to find them. Also, look for places with artificial cover (trash, sheets of metal, plywood, etc.) in open fields. Kings are often found beneath these items.

By far, the best time to find snakes in California is in the springtime.

Yes, but remember driving in a rural area or in the suburbs is much better than driving within the city. San Diego has grown by leaps and bounds over the years. Many of the wilderness areas are now covered by homes. Although there may still be snakes in those newly developed areas, including rattlers, it is best to hunt in the areas east of the city.

Kingsnakes spend a lot of time underground too, especially in the cool months. They are found on the surface in spring, and often under cover. Be reminded that kingsnakes are just some of the animals found under cover. Rattlers can also be found under the surface cover, and you never know what is underneath until you have lifted something up. Some precautions are necessary to avoid being bitten by a venomous snake. It can become life threatening if medical help is not found soon after the bite. A few years ago, someone was bitten by a rattler in San Diego and died. It is well known that there are rattlesnakes at Torrey Pines golf course and at other golf courses in the San Diego area. So be careful when lifting objects and where you put your hands and feet.

It is the same almost anywhere else in California. Summer time is often too hot and dry for snake activity, especially during the day time. Early fall is good too, but the number is much less than spring time.
