Feeding

RainbowsRule Nov 15, 2008 08:48 PM

How often do you guys feed your snakes? I have an approx. 2 month old BRB and it eats once a week. This is how often th breeder was feeding him and i wanted to know if I should feed him more often or not. Thanks in advance.

As with most snakes at that age they say every 7-10 days I think, most do every week like you said. Just keep a schedule and you should be good, record what he eats, how much, what he refuses, when he sheds and even when he poops, etc into a calendar. That way you'll get into a good rythym and you'll notice when something is off with him.

While you are keeping records you can include records on length and/or weight. Measuring is not real accurate but you can see a trend over time to see that the snake is growing at a reasonable rate. IMO weight is a better indicator of health and growth. You should see a steady longterm weight gain with some variations caused by recency of feeding or defecation. Often times a weight loss or lack of weight gain while feeding okay can be the first sign of a problem. I used to weigh each of them when they shed and kept a three ring binder notebook that eventually got too big to work with.

Once a week is right on for a BRB until it gets to be adult sized - around 2 years old. Assuming that you are feeding appropriate sized meals. The mouse or rat pink/pup should be about the same size around as the snake.

Skipping a meal or two is no big deal. In the wild they can go for weeks, even months withut food. While I don't recommend extended periods of fasting, a week or two is no big deal. For example if I'm going on a week long vacation, I skip the meal prior and duh the meal during my vacation for two skipped meals. That way the cage stays cleaner while I'm away.
