Rat and Ball Breeding

jaymiller242 Nov 15, 2008 08:49 PM

I am moving to Houston soon and I was wondering if anyone has a hook in the Houston area for rat breeders. Also I am moving to Houston in Jan, Feb time frame.. How late can I hold off on breeding my snakes before I have totally missed the season. I was wanting to start putting a few of them together just to get them introduced but after one or two pairings I said that didnt make any sense to be doing because I dont want any of them laying eggs until I m moved and have them all set up. If I wait until mid or end of Feb will I still have good luck or do many of the snakes seem to ovulate before the end of Feb? Thanks for your help guys and gals.

you can breed ball pythons any time of the year in captivity. I would wait until you get moved or at least until it gets closer.

Thanks Matt, See I am pretty new at this and I thought they had normal cycles which of course I know we can alter(or the big breeders can alter)with temps, lighting and that kind of thing but I thought their natural life cycle has them ovulating in the very early months of the year. Does that seem to happen later like in Feb or Mar ? Or is it something that is brought on by putting the males in with the females? If I make the move and get them situated and start putting them together in Feb, March or April do I still stand a chance of possibly having a few clutches. Thanks,. Jay

I would think you could go ahead and put pairs together now. I also live in AZ. I was just looking at my records from last year and I started putting pairs together around November 1st. The earliest ovulation I got was February 15th.

breed now....it doesn't take that long to throw a male in females' cage

they'll breed some....then you'll move....then you will breed again.......

they will ovulate then lay when they want....the move will go fine......

I assume you will throw them into the same boxes /racks....right?.....

....they'll be fine........feed and breed all you can.....load them up......

Hey there, not sure what you meant by..(I assume you will throw them into the same boxes /racks....right?.....) Do you mean for the move or after the move? I am just hoping to get all of them moved without losing any of them from stress or something like that. Its going to be a rather long process of a week or two maybe from taking things(my racks)down until I get them to my new home and am able to set them back up. I was thinking that I will put them all into seperated bags for the trip and set the bags into coolers or fish boxes. Should keep them from getting drastic temp changes I think. Then I will take the coolers or boxes in a car so the heat can be regulated a bit my me and take them in and out of the hotel rooms with me everynight in the boxes.. Anyways someone said they have never had one of their snakes ovulate before the 15 of Feb so I guess I will spend the next 2 months before the move breeding them and then try doing it again when I get to Houston. They dont lay til like almost 2 months after they ovulate right? So we are talking earliest clutches about April to May? Thanks

yes...same racks/ boxes ...after the move...so the smell will be familiar to them....same size, same box, light, smells and all...

anyways....

breed now...you need the oviducts loaded with sperm before ovulation not after...not during...

...yes they breed now, ovulate feb to april then lay like june to sept....

.....you'll be fine...styro boxes will help...

you should lose none during a move....people pack them like this and move them to and from shows...all the way from Canada to Daytona and back all in one week....(and they drive really really fast...LOL)....(hey..took Corey 16 hours to get home...took us 16 hours to get home....I live in Pa he lives in Canada...you do the math...and we were movin'...)...HA.....think about the move from Africa.....boxed...set around weeks...boxed again....fly to US....set at airport awhile...set at show....set in rooms....

you'll be fine....
