Breeding Questions w/ Nics

nicsrus Nov 17, 2008 08:17 PM

This will be my first attempt with my nics this year. I was wondering when I should put them together? They both feed once a week and tonight I was getting ready to combine them and it seems like the fem was ready to feed again. I just don't want to see either of them get hurt in this. I've had both of them since they were babies and I have a lot of time and sweat in them. Should I just put them together and see what happens??? Also, what is your thought on covering the cages while breeding?
Thanks

I bred a pair of nics last year. I have two pairs of Nicaraguans currently breeding now. So I'm no expert by any means, but I can relate my experience...

I introduce them at the start of cooling. The all the males started courting within days of introduction. One pair started within hours. Currently my females are still eating but my males have gone off feed. I'll keep them together until see a dramatic loss of interest.

For last years' pairing, I introduced my male to the female in October, they courted heavily in November, a little in December, heavy in January (which is when I believe she ovulated)and in February there was less interest, I separated them in march and I had a nice litter in may. My male went off feed in January, and my female went off feed in December.
