please help with boa's nose!...

bergmantis Nov 18, 2008 04:16 PM

So, this problem once happened to my older female 2 years ago and is now happening to my hypo and albino. Looking at the photos, you can see the wound on their nose. The hypo's looks bad the the albino is just starting to get it. Anyone ever have this happen or know what caused it?

As for the albino, she is housed in a vision cage with belly heat, 88-90 hot, 80 cool, 50-60% humidity. She eats great and never displays any other health concerns. Her cage is not to small either if it is a nose rub.

For the hypo, he has been breeding heavily with a female hypo and humidity and temps are the same as the albino. He recently shed and this photo was taken after the shed.

I went to the vet for the female it happened to 2 years ago and the vet told me it may be a burn and wait for it to shed. Well, I have no idea how this can be a burn or what else can cause it.

Thanks,

Mat

either a nose rub or a burn. How are you heating the cages, could the snake get it's nose up against a hot or overly warm surface? Have you observed either snake rubbing their nose? Maybe actively looking for a way out? Any spot that gives a little like a loose screen might get them pushing against it???

Good luck with them, very nice looking snakes.

I purchased a 04 boa just this year with the exact same thing on his nose. He had a heavy RI. I increased his heat a bit and the humidity to about 70-80% spraying him 3 times a day and it's going away.

I hope someone with more experience will chime in. I know it won’t rub off, but I believe it’s the boa equivalent of a runny nose. I treated mine like an RI and it's nearly gone. Just one experience though.

yea that looks like a nose rub or burn.... my male has had the same thing during breeding season. i have a female in the cage below him and he'll sit with his nose on the back of the cage (in the vision cages i have) where there is a plastic screen for ventilation. he really did a number on it last time.... i put neosporin on it and blocked up half the screen with plastic and i havent had to big of a problem.

I too would say nose rub. They are abrasions caused by rubbing the nose. They can nose rub for a variety of reasons usually from stress and trying to escape or from an RI.
