Winter Sleepy Time

hayseed Nov 19, 2008 08:35 AM

I'm amazed at how my collared lizards seem to really sense the changing season. I've been letting my reptile room cool down a bit at night and trying to time the lights to match the outside photo-period. I've kept some under-tank heat on the collared tank at night and then turn on all their lights and basking heat back on first thing in the morning. It's now getting dark very early and almost completely dark by the time I get home in the evening. By then my collareds, especially the girls, are all tucked in their favorite spots to sleep the night away. My boy seems to always go to bed last! It's almost like he keeps watch until I come in and turn the lights out. I swear, he's even given me a few "funny looks" just before he crawls under a rock like he's saying good night. I've half expected him to wink at me.

I assume all this sleeping in response to the changing season is very normal. That's what my geckos do and most of my snakes. But I miss seeing my girls more. It seems that now the only time I see them much is on the weekends when I'm home in the middle of the day.

I guess this will be one more reason to love Spring time.

Yeah, I decided not to brumate mine this year either because they are fairly new to my house, and some are rehabs. I just want to give them time to really adjust, and I'm not in any hurry to breed them. I imagine I will get some babies this coming season, but I have some major life changes to make, so I don't want too many babies.

I don't feed mine nearly as early or as much. They just aren't eating as much and they do tuck themselves in early!
