Shipping mishaps

So... we sent two of our little guys out yesterday for priority overnight arrival. We included a 40 hour heatpack, and the area the snakes were in was reading in the low 70's when they left.

FedEx experiences delays, long story short.. they won't arrive until tomorrow afternoon. I'm worried about the little guys, I know they still arrive a bit cool with a heat pack, but now it looks like they'll be out longer than the 40 hours of heat the pack provides them. It is also much colder there tonight than it was yesterday. Blargh.

Buyer was very understanding, at least. We've all got our fingers crossed.

I almost understand. I got my little guy in Oct. and he felt like he was in a refridgerator. I think they will be fine. I know how much I worried about him even though I wasn't the one shipping. Hope everything's fine.

Yea, I'm in NY. It's freezing and really dark already, and it's 6:50. Hope they are safe in this weather, unlike me I have a warm bed, and thick socks.

Best of luck to your shipment, hope all goes well for you

i'll be nervous til morning. I know reptiles can do okay in cold weather for awhile, but not too long..

You made me imagine a snake wearing thick socks, which made me smile, though.

I keep an eye on the weather in Memphis all the time and it was freezing there last night and again tonight. Fedex delivers a day late on a small percentage of my shipments but, I am very careful this time of year. I have a bunch of babies that I will probably be keeping until spring. 40 hour heat packs do work 40 hours or more most of the time and insulation will keep the box okay for awhile after that. Little boids that arrive very cold often are okay after warming back up.

As an aside, I got a few FedEx shipments 2 weeks ago that came through Indy rather than the usual Memphis. We'd calculated the ship date based on Memphis lows, thankfully it was pretty mild in Indy those evenings as well.

Hope the little critters are ok. The 40 hour pack will probably last a little longer so they should make it through the night ok and just be a bit chilly when they finally arrive. Make sure you tell your buyer to warm them slowly and they should be fine.

Interesting. I've actually only had one package go through memphis so far. I believe I've just been shipping into states too near to bother going to that hub.

AFAIK, all FedEx packages go to the sort facility (hub), I'm sure there are more than one of these around the country. The process is origin -> airport -> sort facility -> destination city -> delivery. Wherever your packages overnight is the sort facility.

The sort facility is the place where I worry about the temperatures most, but the origin and destination cities have to be reasonable temps as well. For packages on this side of the country, Memphis has been the sort facility to watch. Just in the past few weeks I had a few go through Indianapolis. Not a nice surprise.

Shipping within the same state goes through Memphis too. Kinda crazy! Delta is coming back to Lubbock I hear....hope that works well for me although I don't ship but several times a year.

Of the 15 or so Fed ex shipments I've done from Charlotte over the last 3 months, there was a 50/50 split between Memphis and Indianapolis for sorting.

I spoke with a Fed ex rep and they couldn't tell me their policy on where packages go to be sorted - I assumed they were sent to either Memphis or Indy based on destination - but they said it depended on a variety of factors including whether planes could get in to Memphis or Indy due to weather, etc.

But we reviewed my 15 shipments and for the most part, ones from Charlotte to the southeast or southwest went through Memphis and ones to the northeast went through Indy.

Fed Ex told me the best bet is to check weather in both Indy and Memphis to determine if its safe to ship.

Dave,
....Thanks for posting that information and the very pretty BRB PIC. I had actually written up a question to post here the other day that got lost by the computer before I posted it. I was wondering which hub Fedex used for shipments from southeastern locations. All of mine from Savannah go through Memphis even when the destination is in the northeastern states. Even recent shipments to the NYC area and Mass went thru Memphis.

Hey Jeff,

Yeah, I was actually surprised to see so many of mine were going through Indy. I thought that all would go through Memphis from Charlotte.

The recent shipments came from Western Mi, Cleveland, OH and Long Island, NY, all went through Indianapolis. It seems to me that last year those same shipments would have gone through Memphis.

Here's your snake's litter brother:

Hey Julie,

You take such sweet photos, when are you going to take photos of my collection for me? LOL.

Thanks!

Whenever you want. I'm doing some ferret pix this weekend, then I'm going to change the lighting for snakes. If you've got any fresh shed critters, there should be pink mice during the week and by next weekend.

Cold, but alive. The female we sent is doing very well, the male is being slow to recover and is just staying in a little ball and not moving around. So i'll have my fingers crossed for the little guy. He is also in shed so I think he ha a bit of a tougher time.

Alive is the key point, slow gentle warming to correct temps should bring them around. May mess up the shed cycle???? But that's no big deal!!
