problems feeding housesnakes

salix Nov 19, 2008 05:55 PM

hi everybody,

first of all, lemme just introduce myself, this being my first post here.

I'm leeroy AKA Salix 21 years old live in Belgium. got snakes for bout 5 or 6 years now.

I have 5 Brazilian rainbowboa's, and recently 2 ball pythons and 3 housesnakes

now the problem I have is with the housesnakes. they are 3 male babies. tried twice to offer food, here's what I tried already

leave thawed pinky overnight
warm up under tap
braining
wiggling the pinky with tweezers

the responds I get, is that they get real aggressive striking at the pinky over and over again, but as soon as they taste it, they let go that is if they get to the point of actually sticking on it long enough to taste.

things I intend to try:
feeding tail
cutting off piece of head so brains are more exposed

and last resort live pinky

now I was hoping someone here could have some tips or just some advise, although they only refused twice and I'm not worrying. I just want to get some info and such. also on the tail feeding, do I just cut it off and wiggle with it or how do I just make this happen?

with kind regards
Leeroy

P.S. is my sentences are somewhat incorrect or I used the wrong words sorry bout that.

Hello Leeroy,
I had baby housesnakes that refused all manner of thawed pinks, scented or otherwise. When I tried live, they ate immediately. Thats all I have for you. Good luck.

What kind of snakes are commonly available in Belgium besides what you have?

uhm well the whole reptile thing in Belgium ain't that large, however just over the border in the Netherlands it's quite big.

we do got a few shops here who have the usual, corns, kings, milksnakes, ball's, boa's, rainbow boa's are less common although common enough i guess (if this makes any sense at all héhé)

the best way of just getting what u want is posting on a forum i guess.

thx for the info, I will try live ones probably next week or so

I agree - day old live pinks might be the easiest way to get them feeding. If they do the strike and release with frozen thawed, you may want to leave the pink in the cage overnight and see if they come back to it once you leave the cage. Also there's a technique commonly called "tease feeding" that might work for you.

I have scented my pinkies with anole. My houses always take them after that.

Hope that helps,
Mike

i tried live pinky mice today,
