HELP! Lost Grey-banded!

jazmaniandevil Nov 20, 2008 01:46 AM

Phoebe, my grey-banded king who's probably only a year old, got out of her tank within the last two days. There is only one heat register she could get into but it's up 7 7inch carpeted stairs in the kitchen, where there is also a toasty fridge. There are only two other places she could go. Outside (where it was about 55 two days ago and now it's below freezing), where she would have to feat three cement 8inch stairs to get outside or into a very large wood pile. Also in the crawlspace under our house, where there is a furnace, but it's very dusty in there and we didn't notice any snake tracks around the only warm place. It is winter and she's been funny about feeding, could she have possibly sought out a more secure location to hibernate? Is it possible for her to climb all those stairs? I mean it was about six inched from her thermometer boost on her tank to the lip, so plausible? What are some good traps to set for her to find (humid hides, etc.) Please help! If she got outside she definitely won't be making it through a montana winter!

I wish you the best of luck finding her, I have known of alterna to be on the run for a long time to turn up after they were believed gone for good. So keep some hope and keep looking.

As for climbing... I have found one crawlilng up the corner of a wall using the texture of the sheetrock. He was all the way by the ceiling when I saw him. So with that in mind, they can climb almost anything.

I have had two get out and I have found both. One was outside the house, and the other was to big to get out. The big one he came slithering up to me while I was thawing out my mice for my other snakes. He smelled them and came to eat, this said he is a great eater. Try leaving out some mice or lizards with a fan blowing across them to see if you can bring him in that way.

I've lost 2 before. One was my first mex mex and I think the first collected since the type -- it disappeared while a friend was caring for the collection. It supposedly turned up a mile away in the center of town -- I eventually got it back as an adult (it was lost as a baby) due to the kindness of Bob Applegate who had acquired it not knowing its history (I will always respect that guy!).

The other was about a 30" animal that pushed out of a cage one day and was gone for several months, only to show up on the other side of the house in my desk drawer!

I hope you are as fortunate and find your snake soon. I know of no sure-fire ways to attract/trap them, especially in the winter when he may be going to hibernate. --hw
