Can i use heat tape for a hot spot instead of bulbs......more

boastud Sep 08, 2003 10:48 AM

I am trying to redo all my baby tubs. I currently have 6 tubs with 60w bulbs for the hot spot and i use twin 48" reptisun 5.0 for uvb. The problem is that the room really heats up, and the cool side gets way to hot. Would there be any problems if i got rid of the spot and used heat tape on the hot side for all the tubs. I already set it up on other tubs and it had a hot side of 113 and the cool side accually stayed cool! I will still have the uvb on them so they will have lights. What do you think?

Is this something that would radiate heat from above or below. If it's going to do it from below, I would say no, that would cause burns, if from above, it might work, but don't forget your UV lights.

Heat tape is always from below.

It is an interesting idea, heat from tape and then light intensity from tubes. I have never done it or heard of it being done. The only issue I could see is that dragons tend to climb towards light to get warm. If just the ground is heated then they may not maintain sufficient temps. Heated perches with heat rope (through a hollow basking site) is another interesting idea. However dragons are programmed to get heat from above, they increase circulation to skin to absorb heat to heat their cores. So belly heat isn't the best option for them. They won't be as capable of thermoregulation.

I got the idea when i was in daytona. I was talking to kevin dunn and that is how he does all of his shows. It was an interesting idea.

It is good to keep them warm. Just might be weird for the dragons. The dragons may get used to it, for a show I think it is fine for longterm I don't know. Only one way to find out.

Wouldn't it basically be the same as a heat rock, which we all know is a big no-no.

It could be, but most people that know heat tape know NOT to use it with out a thermostat or a rheostat at least. Maybe I assumed he knew this. With a control mechanism heat tape is safe. Almost every snake breeder uses it on snakes that are worth up to 60,000.
