WOW! So somebody finally jumped on the V. yuwonoi! Congrats! How do you have them set up? Is it only 2 that you have? The best of luck to you! I hear they make poor captives as adults, but I guess we'll see how they wind up when they're raised.

Yeah. I've been looking for them for too long to pass them up. I have three total. I'm hoping getting babies will increase my chances on having somewhat calm animals. I have them set up in a temporary quarantine cage that is just a simple trough set up with about a foot of substrate. Their permanent homes are being built this weekend.

What are the specs on the adult enclosure?

jmugleston Nov 21, 2008 02:54 PM

Originally it was planned on 8x4x4, but the burrowing has made me decide to provide more height in order to allow for a couple/few feet of substrate depth. I'm planning on 2 large cages with a third smaller/temporary cage in case they don't get along or if they are as dimorphic as the V. doreanus. I don't want to house them together if there is a major difference in adult size.

Keep us posted! How are their apetites so far? Have you attempted feeding?

jmugleston Nov 21, 2008 04:55 PM

So far they have had great appetites. They eat daily. As do all my monitors. I keep tarantulas too and we use the term "pet holes" to describe a spider that sits in its burrow all the time and the only way you know it is alive is by the food disappearing. That is how these are so far. I drop mice in the cage and by the time I come back they are all gone. I now have 3 expensive "pet holes." Maybe someday I'll be lucky enough to see one again.

A couple of years ago someone posted a link to an article.
The article was about "life in a burrow", when you read it, the article sounded to most experienced monitor keepers as if it was referring to monitors, only they were referring to tarantulas.
The person who did this was a very nice woman who had black roughnecks that she kept which would not stop breeding. Her problem was not enough room to keep the babies, and she didnt want to sell them.
Now keep in mind she was possibly the first to breed them, and to this day the most sucessful keeper of black roughnecks. She also kept tarantulas.
Get this, she even raised her babies sometimes in cages with bearded dragons, but they were fed well and they left the beardies alone until she could get them into a bigger cage.
Its a shame she stopped coming here, and I dont know if she still keeps those monitors anymore.
Good luck with them, pretty colors.

Very nice! I saw those the first day they were posted but unfortunately didn't have the bankroll to pick them up. Best of luck with them. They are quite beautiful.
