ATB Pics from Costa Rica

andyh Nov 21, 2008 03:29 PM

This isn't normally the kingsnake forum that I spend the most time on, but I figured you guys might appreciate some pics of a beautfiul ATB that we found just outside of Dominical. An awesome place with great herping.

She was on a branch overhanging the little river we were boating down, and she was NOT happy about being snatched off of it. Definitely my favorite find of the trip.

Thats not an ATB, It's a Ruschi or Black Tailed Tree Boa.

I am going to have to agree with Eric that is a ruschi and not a hortulanas. But it is a beautiful ruschi!!

I agree-definitely a Ruschi. Very nice catch. Just out of curiosity-was it a biter right off the branch?. I have both somewhat docile and human hater animals in the collection. Thanks, Jeff

I'm glad you guys enjoyed the photos. Apparently I came to the right place to find expertise.

The Ruschi calmed down after a bit; though she really came in swinging when I first grabbed her. On the first pic, you can see the damage to her belly. Something - maybe a beak - took a nice little chunk out of her. Other than that, she was in great condition.

Here are a few more pics to tide all you guys over until your next vacations.

Neonate Fer-De-Lance (Terciopelo). Male.

Our friend who lives there caught this boa (BCI?) in his neighbor's shower a few days before we arrived.

Northern Cat-eyed snake

Green and Black Poison Dart

Golfo Dulce Poison Dart

Central America Bullfrog. This guy was difficult to hold onto. Notice the beefy arms.

Ignore the USC shirt. Go Ducks!

It wasn't too long ago they were Corallus hortulanus ruschenbergeri...a sub-species of ATB, and sometimes only considered a different looking ATB "locale"

In Europe still a lot of people talk about the hortulanus complex, thus making them all a hortulanus sub species. Kind of stuck in time, LOL

Hey Mike, so the corallus.com is gone forever or what?

treesnake888 Nov 22, 2008 01:55 PM

Wow! That's an amazing one. I know that there aren't too many Ruschi's in captivity. This particular one is definitely colored a little differntly than the ones I've seen in pictures. Maybe it's just the lighting... or the pictures... or many I'm just seeing things. Whatever the case may be, it's frickin cool!

I just wanted to let you know that you made my day by sharing these pictures. What an awesome animal. I need to get back to the tropics.

It looks like it. It doesn't surprise me. Paully had talked about shutting it down numerous times over the years. It's kind of sad. I sent a lot of people over there, it was the absolute best source of detailed Corallus species info anywhere on the internet.
