Has anyone worked with Harlan mice?

nickstark Nov 22, 2008 02:16 PM

Yes, I know there is a section for feeder discussion but not much traffic there.

I have ordered mice several times from Harlan and the P1 all breed great and give tons of babies. But I have had little to no luck getting the F1 ones to breed. Each time we have bought surplus CD-1 mice and have only a couple groups of F1 animals reproducing. We have allowed the F1's to get good size about 5 weeks before separating them from the adults. Then we have let them grow out about 8 weeks for the females and 6 weeks for the males before placing them into breeding groups.

Just wondering if there is a trick to these guys.

Any advice would be great!

Thank you,
Nick

I'm not sure what CD-1 strain is.....I checked Harlan but couldn't find it.
I have used ICR and Swiss Webster from Harlan and they produce large litters. I never had a problem with raising the babies up as breeders.
Give one of those a try. Just make sure your breeding rack is sterile and no wild rodents can get to it. The Harlan mice are "clean" when you receive them. Any contact with disease will wipe them out.

ICR and CD-1 are the same thing, I have sterilized the rack before getting new animals but still seem to have fertility issues with the F1 animals. The P1 breed like crazy but I don't want to have to buy new breeders every 6-7 months.

Tomsey: Did you buy surplus animals?
