Room Temps at 65 - 68

rottenweiler9 Nov 22, 2008 05:50 PM

Anyone keep their cages in basement or rooms that the temp is around 65-68 degrees.

What is our cage set up like to keep the temps up.

I do have a heat panel in my six ft vision cage, wrapped in silver insulated bubble stuff. ( I know you like that HH). I also started covering the glass with this so the heat stays in and seems to have worked, but I am afraid they will get aggressive being in the dark all the time. It may be good for them, but not sure. I am no pro.

Not sure what else I can do to warm up the far end of the cage.

My other thought is to make the heat panel set so the floor temp gets to be about 80 and then use the two heat lights on the other side.

Or, get heat pads for the middle of the cage and set at 85 degrees.

Thoughts?

Here is my solution.

The flexwatt on one side is for ambient and the other side is for the hot spot.

I routed 3/8 inch recess for the flexwatt, then put reflectix to keep the heat in the cage instead of heating the cage below. I also used 3/4 inch square steel to reinforce the floor since I took so much material out of the plywood.

Here is a pic of what we've done, there will be 8 more cages when we're done.

The other idea with the flex watt sounds pretty good (and really nice looking cages/racks) - I can barely use a screwdriver so that option would not work for me. If you have a large heat panel on one side, you could always add a second, smaller heat panel to the opposite end to keep ambient temps in the upper 70's/80 ish. I've done that with great success in cooler basement rooms.

if you were to insulate the room the heat from the cages would raise the ambient temp if that didn’t bring it up high enough I would go buy a heat bulb and put it in the middle of the room it would have to heat up then & human heating pads from Wal-Mart are a cheap easy way to heat up one side or both of the tank but insulation wont jack your energy bill like heat bulbs and heat pads one last thought gas of propane fire place with a thermostat

Jeff,
Did you happen to notice how many degrees the Reflectix added to your temperatures? Just curious if it was just a measley few or a noticeable amount.

Later!
