surface area of belly heat?

Joel_Thomas Nov 22, 2008 06:45 PM

Hello all,

I have vision caging for my adult boas and in addition to the forty watt light bulbs I use 11" x 17" ultratherm heat mats.

I will be purchasing additional mats and would like to keep the wattage use to a minimum I have a couple of 11" x 11" mats that I use for my male cages which are at the bottom of the stacks with no problems.

I control all lighting heat with herpstatII thermostats, but do not control the ultratherms and they keep the belly heat between 88 and 91 degrees.

My question is how much square footage do any of you feel is appropriate for adult gravid females of around seven to nine feet?

Thanks in advance.

Joel

Hi Joel

I use 2 feet of 12 inch flexwatt under my girls cages. I adjust the amount that is actually under the cage depending on what I am trying to accomplish. When gravid they get the entire length. My girls are only 6-7 1/2 feet and are in 4 foot cages. Hopefully someone else will comment who have bigger girls.

Hope this helps. It works for me.--Kraig

I use the 11x23's for all my Boas over 6ft. Anything smaller gets the 11x17's

Hey Joel,
I have Vision model 400 cages for my females. I use a strip of 1/2" X 1 1/2" wide plywood between the cages to allow air flow.. Then strips of 11" X 16" flex watt heat tape. Temp is set at 91 to 93 with a Helix. Heat on the inside of floor registers 88 to 92 degrees with a temp gun. This method seems to be successful so far..

Hope this helps,

Chaz Neely
