WELL I WENT OUT AGAIN TODAY WITH

TOM_CRUTCHFIELD Nov 22, 2008 08:53 PM

a lifelong friend Dennis Sargent who came down to visit and see the new farm. Weather conditions were absolutely horrible for collecting being cool with fairly brisk winds. Nonetheless we had a great time and found a few things I thought I'd share with you. First we had to find an EDB for Dennis to see as he hasn't seen one in the field for many years. As luck would have it we found this nice 4' EDB first and it was the ONLY one we saw today.

Secondly we found a lot of Tree Snails [Liguus] and assorted butterflies. The snails of which many species are found ONLY in S.E. Florida are all threatened or endangered and it's a treat to see them..

We then decided to look for Corn Snakes and saw this and knew we were in the right place

In a short time we found these two and took a few pics

Our last find was this miniscule Ringneck Snake. Even though our herping didn't result in fantastic finds it was a wonderful day. I can't think of anything finer than to go out with good friends and spend the day beating the bush looking for herps. All pics were taken by Dennis Sargent. Hope you enjoy....TC

Still amazed at their ability to almost vanish in the background.

Nice..

Very cool. I would love to be able to herp for Corns but I guess then it would take away the fun of maintaining them.

Hey TC, at one time coachwhips were common down in your area. (I think there’s a Walmart right where we use to catch them right off the end of the Turnpike in Homestead) All the big dry fields I walked through in the old days down there are developed now. They are extinct in Broward, (if you remember the old Hollywood Sportatorium- there’s no vacant land there anymore!) as far as I can tell. When’s the last time you’ve spotted one?
