What to breed question

dzbreptiles Nov 22, 2008 09:40 PM

There is always a lot of discussion about selective breeding but I am not quite sure what to do with this particular female. She is a partial black back and exhibits what I consider to be the increasing melanin gene. Now to the question. What to breed her to? My choices are as follow: Pastel, Spider, Pinstripe, Lesser, Mojave, Fire, Yellow Belly, Albino, Caramel or Hypo. Not really to excited about producing hets for anything so I am considering a co-dom. Any thoughts or opinions welcome. Thanks JP

Although you aren't interested in a recessive project, she'd be awesome for an albino for high contrast.

Of your other choices, I'd go with YB. I think she's probably too dark a choice for the pastel.

IMO, I would breed her to your albino or caramel. The darker hets make for high contrast coloful albinos or caramels!

Best wishes

This is just my opinion but I would breed her to the male that would create the most financial gain. The codoms have really come down in value and with the market the way it is I am sure the codoms will drop even more. I would breed her to the Caramel and make hets. I think that would be the best for a short term and a long term. You could keep some of the clutch for future breeders and sell some of the cluch as well. But if you favor one male over all the others then you should go with that no matter what the outcome. That will elimanate all of the could ofs or should ofs because you did what you wanted to do. Just my opinion.

I would breed her to one of the color morphs you mentioned. The Pattern morphs won't really be enhanced by her dark base color and if anything could end up looking "dirty".

In that vain I would shoot for:
Hypo
Albino
Mojave
Caramel

One of those morphs I think would be the best. I know you mentioned not wanting to make hets. but the next generation after them could be outstanding. I never really thought a dark Mojave would be especially appealing and always thought it would be best to give the Mojaves to the lighter, blushed females. However, I saw a Mojo that had been crossed with a female at least as dark as yours and the the results were phenomenal!

Think of a Black Pastel's contrast along with the creams and purple/brown colors of a Mojave... much cooler looking that I would have thought!

Thanks everyone. A lot of food for thought. I am not against making hets But I am already breeding the Simple recessive males to het females this year and figure I may get plenty as it is. Brandon, the Mojave or the pinstripe are my thoughts. My Mojo male is the result of a breeding to a dark female. Thats why I picked him. His black is black. But his offspring this year didn't carry that on. As for the pinstripe I was thinking along the lines of the Camo ball. Thanks again for the comments. JP
