Hypo questions! Tail spots ghosting out on superhypo? Different kinds of hypo mechanisms?

Starling Sep 08, 2003 12:29 PM

Does anyone know if there are different kinds of hypo mechanisms? I.e. "Ghost" hypos where the spots develop and then fade and regular hypos where they just don't develop the spots in the first place? I seem to be noticing different kinds of hypo mechanisms in and wonder what everyone knows about this? Is there a ghost type which is dominant or co-dominant? I read something about this recently. The spots are ghosting out on my superhypo breeder's tail, she is nearing two years old. Also, she is het albino, I bred her with a hybino and expected the the het babies (not albinos) she had to all go hypo or superhypo. At first I was disappointed because the first het baby got spots (only where the black bands were though, none on tang areas). But now I see those spots are ghosting out---fading out, and looks like the animal will go hypo or superhypo. However this animal was hatched 6/6 and this is just starting to happen now. I have also noticed with my hypo albinos that the it takes a couple months for the orange to start encroaching. My original hypo albino breeder male is now over three years old and the orange has just about completely taken over, you can hardly discern the bands, this seems to increase not only in the first year but over years. Has anyone else who works with hypos or hybinos noticed this?

For those who breed hypos, have you seen them develop spots that then fade or did they never get spots?

starlling, first off it depends on if any other gene is playing any role.... hypo is one thing and tang is another.. originally they were not part of the same gecko and were bred into them. i haavve had comepletely orange and purple baies turn to a high yellow with spots... the spots faded and sometimes reappear with aging.
about the ghost thing, i talked to nicole she told me the ghosts were from ray hines original hypo and were never introduced into tangs or high yellows... resulting in the ghostly appearance.... they almost look like they might have some anatheristic properties going on nut homestly i do not know. the ghosts are pretty much as close (as i understood it) to the original hypos as you can get and these were not crossed into other morph lines or even selectively bred traits, ie, tangs and high yellows patts albinos whatever

Thanks for the info Robin last night I had just come back from a bacelorette party in LA and then dinner at aunt's all day straight from airport and must have been half blind with exhaustion because today the geckos look like they did before- OH, hello, guess they were about to be SHEDDING!!! DOH!!!

Here is the mom, whose tail looked ghosty last night, and now looks normal again:

and the son, who also looked all faded yesterday and has returned to more recent previous appearance- hello shedding!!! I am still expecting those spots to fall off...I know there is a ontuum for offspring, but with hypoo da and superhypo mom one would think...

Here she is in April, were you can see the spots already fading, she even had more the previous month.

Then here she is in august one spot left and it looks like she is going to keep that one.
