Completely OT: Shark tooth

natsamjosh Nov 23, 2008 07:07 PM

I know this is really OT, but people seemed interested when I showed some shark teeth a couple months ago. I got this beauty from a friend of mine who reluctantly sold it so he could raise money for a HD TV. It's a near 5" blue megalodon tooth, really beautiful. (I'm attaching a picture of Mendoza so this post isn't 100% off-topic.)

Thanks,
Ed

That is one big tooth, would've hated to be in the ocean when they were around. Is Megalodon the largest of the prehistoric sharks that we know of?

Yes, megalodon was the biggest shark that ever lived. Occasionally teeth over 7" long are found. I think the biggest so far is 7.5"!! A shark with teeth that big would make the shark in "Jaws" look like a guppy.

Thanks,
Ed

im having a hard time trying to comprehend how a shark with a 7 1/2 tooth would compare to a monster shark of today... have any more stats or even better pictures comparing?

Roughly speaking, for modern Great whites, for every inch of an anterior tooth, the shark will have 8-10 feet of length. So a great white shark with 2" anterior teeth will be around 20 feet long. The theory is that since megalodon teeth are similar in shape to Great Whites, then that formula can be used for estimating the length of a megalodon shark given the tooth size.
So the diagram that Dave posted is probably pretty accurate.

So am I in the running for the Golden Boa "Most Off Topic" award?

Thanks,
Ed
