Another R. Brev on her last leg...m

trinacliff Sep 08, 2003 12:58 PM

Is there anything I can do for her? I know nothing will save her, really, but I feel helpless just watching her die. Her eyes are sunken in and I found her hanging by her front two legs, but she's still alive. I thought she was dead. My eye ointment did not arrive in time, and she's just gone way downhill over the past few days. I think if I had gotten the ointment in time, I may have had a chance to save her...so now I'm feeling guilty, even though I tried my darndest to find the darn stuff.

I just wish she was not suffering...

Darn, Kristen....
Sorry to hear this. But please don't beat yourself up because you couldn't get the eye ointment in time.

We keep a "first aid kit" for our chams... it contains most all things for medical emergencies. True, thanks to our vet, we have more items than most hobbyists would keep around, but if you plan to continue keeping herps - there are really some basic items you should keep on hand for their "sick" care.

When we have a tiny cham that is sadly dehydrated, we isolate it in a small plastic shoebox, place very moist towels in the bottom for substrate and sit the container on a heating pad. We place the digital thermometer/hydrometer in there and keep it around 80-85F with as high of humidity as possible - without being a swamp. For the brev... 80F should be good.

Have you tried an eyedropper with warm water or pedialite? We prefer Emeraid - but it is becoming hard to find, and usually only through a vet.

It's a last ditch effort... and most times it won't be enough - but once in a while a miracle happens. It's worth a try.

You'll be in our thoughts...

...about the emergency re-hydration chamber when Makeda first got sick. I had her quarantined and all but tried to keep humidity up with substrate and plants. I did have moist paper towel over the top of substrate when Bart ended up in emergency "room." I don't know if it'd made a diff or not since we really don't know what happened but I know that she hadn't had any fluids for a few days c'est la vie

Well, she finally passed away...I knew it was coming, but I'm still sad. I will also NEVER buy another wild caught animal again. I feel that it had alot to do with our problems. I should've known better, but that was all I could find at the time...it's no excuse, and I learned from that mistake.

Now I'm trying to figure out just what to say to my almost 3 year old who really loved her. He told her goodnight every night..."helped" me "spray her limbs". Her name was Aubie, and she lived in his room. He saw her hanging (still alive) from her front legs earlier before I knew she was that way, and he kept saying "Aubie fell down".."let's take her to the doctor". He knows something is wrong because he cried tonight saying "aubie fell down" over and over. Oh the joys of parenthood...we try so hard to protect our little ones from heartache, and even at 3 they begin to learn the lessons of life and death.

I'm very sad...I think I need a Carpet cham to cheer me up.

Oh kristen, I am so sorry! I truly sympathize...and for your little one (two-leggged) as well. Her death may not have anything to do directly wtih the eye. The eye thing was probably a symptom of other stuff going on - as I know you had problems from the get-go. Will you get "no-name" a boyfriend?

BTW, I will answer your emails today
