Does anyone have tips? I've tried live pinks scented with fish and f/t also.He wants nothing but feeder goldfish! Thanks! Jeff

Jeff, My blackneck will only eat live minnows from the water dish as well, She was born in late August and is a foot long already, so something must be right.

I'm surprised that you haven't heard that goldfish is bad for snakes.

It contains an enzyme that blocks vitamin absorption.

Forgive me if I spell it wrong.. Thiamanaise (The enzyme)

Rosy reds are another big no no for the same reason.

Feeder guppies are the cheapest and safest food for this, Unless you have access to Dace minnows.

Bait shops sell a lot of minnows, but make sure they are not fathead minnows, same enzyme.

I'm in the same boat, MoJo will not even look at a pinky for me yet.

I have tried scenting with live fish, Tilapia, toad and salamander, still no luck.

I know she likes the salamanders, I obtained her as a non feeder and it was a salamander that got her started.

try giving her some small worms....and then put pinkie parts in with chopped worms if she eats them. it works for me for some of my more picky eaters.

Will a Blackneck show interest in worms Don??

Mine runs away from them.

Phibs and fish seem to be the only things I can get to work.

depends...some will, some won't. the pair I had years ago ate them on occasion. not as regularly as some other species

Although I've never tried it, I've heard of people putting frozen/thawed pinkies in the water dish with minnows. The snakes grab whatever they come in contact with and swallow it. I'm not sure if that will work, but I reckon it's worth a try.

I must be lucky. I have a new MoJo blackneck that started eating pinks after the second feeding. I defrost them in the fish water and then warm them a little.

hello ... he wants a leopard frog ... Mine were F1 CB's that I got as babies. The seller also sent a baby jar full of frozen leopard frogs. I used these to scent first p-parts then small pinks with frog skin strips stuffed in the pinks mouth. Once they ate pinks like that they were full on rodent eaters .. FT

I would like nothing more than to get my MoJo girl on pinks.

She is getting big and I already had to go break ice to catch safe minnows. (I don't use store minnows anymore after they killed my Infernalis)

You're right, they can be stubborn. I start with either bait minnows, guppies or small freshly-killed frogs. I chop them up and mix in a very small amount of chopped up pinky parts, then offer it all on a small jar lid or paper plate. They quickly learn to eat this mixture-after that I gradually increse the proportion of pinky, until they are eating a pure mouse meal!

this has worked for blackneck, eastern and checkered garters (checkereds are the easiest)....

For my little eastern I would chop up worms put then in a bottle cap and put in pinkie parts. After a few feeding I justed scented the pinkie parts with worm. Then after 2 feedings I stoped scenting. And now that s/hes bigger s/he gets whole pinkies.

That's great

Won't work with too many Blacknecks though...

My two 08 blacknecks... I beleive siblings of yours, are both taking f/t rish scented pinkies with some hesitation. Just be persistent!
