Can someone please help me?

steelbrood Sep 08, 2003 01:52 PM

I just got seth about 1 month ago. When I bought him I was told he was a spotted python. I was also told that a spotted python and childrens python are the same thing.

I went to the place I always buy my pinkies from on the weekend and asked if he had any spotted pythons, he didnt but told me that he would be getting some childrens in that day. I asked aren't they the same he replied no. I was like ummmm.....

So are they the same? What is poor little seth?

But is seth a spotted or a childrens?

Childrens pythons (Antaresia childreni) and Spotted pythons (Antaresia maculosa) are different species, the pic you posted looks to be either a cape york spotted python or the striped morph spotted python. but to answer your question, yes, childrens and spotteds are 2 different pythons, they all used to be lumped into childrens but taxonomic work in the 90s showed they were different species, and they are now classified as such.

They are seperate species. Being from the same genus though, they can hybridize (breed to each other). The basic care is the same they are similar in size about 3ft. i don't keep any but a friend of mine does he like them as they are generally more tractable. If you don't want to breed them you can get a childrens. Or you can just keep it seperate from the spotted. As far as I know they are not ophiophagus so you can probaly keep more then one specimen together. Grab a few books on pythons TFH publishes some ok ones but you can get some pretty good ones from Krieger publishers. You can order most books from your local book store or purchase some from a show. Books are always good for references.

My website, www.thereptileshed.com, has info on spotted pythons and links to sites with articles on the whole Antaresia genus (spotted, Children's, Stimson's, and anthill).

Not only is that a Spotted, but that is one of the nicest Cape Yorks I have seen in a long time. It has the classic Cape York pattern and a nice light color. Definately different than any Childrens. Very cool snake.
