03 Suriname BOA eating mystery

pyoung Nov 25, 2008 12:09 PM

Hello experts,

I have a 03 Suriname Red tail boa that I've had since he was a neonate. He is now well over 6 feet and thick as a branch. 6 months ago he refused a meal for the first time and he was on a Lg Fresh thawed rat every two weeks. He refused for two months, then he ate and when I tried to feed him again he refused and didn't eat again for 3 months. Two weeks ago I offered and he aggressively took the rat, contricted and consumed him. This past monday I offered him another Rat and he came to it and then refused to eat it. I left it in the cage and he ate it. I'm confused, He's in the same setup for 3 years now, a Vision Cage 4' X 28 X 28 with the hot area 90 degrees and ambient temps 80 degrees with the cool spot between 78 and 80 degrees. He has a bowl he can soak in and I change the water daily. Can anyone give me some insight on this issue. Thanks

He's all grown up and no longer wants to eat every other week?

BTW, I have no Suri's, just speculating.

Also, by any chance do you also have a female boa (any ssp)? Could be "getting the urge"??

My initial thought was that, but I don't have any females. I thought maybe because the weather has changed may be that had something to do with it. It never happened before so I was a little confused.

As I have females around (BCI) I can't really say for sure but I'd think the change of seasons could trigger breeding mode. Even without that sweet smell of a receptive female in the air he might "know" it's time to go looking for one. Is he more active?

Yes,

He's very active, all over the cage.

Sounds like a male in search of a female.

I had 1 do the same to me 3 days ago, and 1 thing I thought was,I could of left the rat sit out to long before I fed her. I put the rat out about 9 pm and didnt get around to feeding till the next night around 6 pm. She snifed it for 5 minits and I finaly got tierd of holding it and I just put the rat in the cage and she still ate it. Just a thought have a good day!

Hmm,

I never thought about that, I do that all the time, maybe I can be a little more attentive about how long I leave the rat out before I feed.
