painting "egg crate" false bottom okay for darts?

I like the idea of a false bottom, but I don't like the white "egg crate". Would painting the stuff black be a problem for the frogs? If not, what kind of paint would work?

Hows about cutting it shorter on the viewable sides? then you can put gravel or another substrate?
