Dying mice

amelcorn Sep 08, 2003 02:08 PM

Hello, I have a problem. Everytime my mice have babies several of them start dying at about 4 weeks of age. Out of 3 litters only 3 have survived long enough to become lunch. They seem to wither away for a lack of another term. They are fed a quality lab block with fresh vegetables occasionally. Parents seem fine, and the surviving babies do well, any ideas? Thanks

What color are the mice? Some combinations of mice don't have lucky offspring.

Sounds to me like you have a bad batch anyway...

... they're starving.

Lab blocks are great for maintenance diets of adult animals. For weanlings, you need something with higher protein levels, and more easily eaten. Have you checked out how hard those blocks are? The babies may find it too difficult to eat them with their tiny teeth.

Try offering them raw oatmeal, whole wheat bread, veggies (but not too much, and NEVER iceberg lettuce, because they'll get the runny bowels), popcorn, fresh corn on the cob, chicken bones and skin, cooked organ meats, sugar-free breakfast cereal products, cat chow, etc.

Didn't think of that. Thanks, I'll try some softer food on this litter.
