Questions about watering the cage.

iso Sep 08, 2003 02:44 PM

I was setting up my tank this weekend and realized I may water it too much

I am using a rinmaker jr system.

Right now I have the red nozzle - ultra fine mist...

it waters my chams cage 4 times a day for three minutes at a time.

I was hoping to use the same system, but was worried that much rainfall might be too much...or do the PDFs like that kind of weather.

should I have more screen on top to handle more evaporation?

Just want to make sure I dont create an environment that is too wet for the frogs or the plants.

thank you

-adam

Screen ventilation would be a good idea for slight evaporation. I also suggest that you make bottom drains if possible. If bottom drainage isn't possible (like an all glass vivarium) then cut back on the length of time your misting system sprays. Setting it to run 3 times a day (once just before the lights come on, once in the middle of the day and once just before the lights go out) for a duration of 3 to minutes per misting may be the best route. You'll need to monitor the accumulation of water and drain if off as necessary I use a small electric table fountain pump for this which as a long hose attached to it so that the water can be pumped into a bucket. A turkey baster will work as well, but is very time consuming especially for a large tank. Best of luck!

oh, forgot to mention, do not use screen to completely cover the top. You will want something to hold in most of the humidity. Another method would be to use a hand operating spray bottle and manually spray the tank 2 or 3 times a day.

what I was hoping to do is use a waterfall pump..that I can swing the nozzel out of the tank to a bucket if needed.

I would just worry about the frogs themselves getting dumped on.

I really cant cut back the amount of rain. The chameleon needs it.

I could move to more mistings per day of a shorter duration though

like 6 times a day for one minute....

From what I can gather I would you can just keep the misting system on the other tank and hand mist this one. I hand mist my tanks, and its not a bit deal for 4 tanks. Water features also allow a longer time between mistings in some cases, but I run fans to keep my glass from fogging up so I make sure to mist mine each morning to keep the humidity up.
